Dr. Hughbert Hilkington

The Good Doctor and his Wife

Dr. Hughbert Hilkington was a human artificer and a Marked of Yog. He is a player character in All Hail Yog, portrayed by Cody Bushee.
“The gangrel scarecrow that stands before you – frayed white hair, thick leather gloves and matching overcoat, glinting here and there with metallic gadgets and contraptions – is overshadowed by the hulking something that looms over his shoulder. This walking charnelhouse is seemingly stitched together from a cemetery’s worth of corpses, human and animal, and stands almost eight feet tall. Hulking and lopsided, she wears an utterly blank expression, a ribbon drool hanging from her slaw jack and lustrous locks of red hair falling from one half of her scalp. At a gesture from her minder, however, she lurches forward, ready to obey his every command."

History

Once a young physiker and engineer in the city of Thorp, Dr. Hughbert and his beloved wife Alizabeth struggled to make ends meet. In search of that all-important breakthrough, Hughbert convinced Alizabeth to assist him in testing a new invention. The resulting accident, horrific in nature, claimed her life and destroyed the workshop in an electrical fire. Hughbert lost everything – his work, his career, his beloved – but could not accept the former.   Scavenging what he could, the Doctor created from her charred remains an abomination, a cruel parody of his wife – a flesh golem. As the years wore on, and his experiments grew more dangerous and less rational, Alizabeth went through many forms, until nearly nothing of her original body remained – save the shock of red hair atop her scalp.

Character

Personality

Whomever the Doctor was before the tragic death of his wife, that man is long gone. All that remain is a deranged husk, a man prone to wild and often needless experiments. While a brilliant physiker and engineer, Hughbert is heedless in the extreme, often incapable of thinking through the consequences of his actions. Above all else, the Doctor loves his wife in his own twisted way and, though he is ultimately responsible for her fate, he will do whatever it takes to care and protect her – and to keep her in this state.

Abilities

Despite his obvious madness, Doctor Hughbert is undeniably a genius in a dozen fields – biology, medicine, engineering, chemistry, ballistics and more. He’s personally developed hundreds of unique creations – from serums that grant their user supernatural powers to mechanical devices of all shapes and stripes. Armed with all these inventions, he can prove quite an unpredictable opponent on the battlefield.   His greatest creation, however, is his beloved flesh golem, Alizabeth. Cobbled together from a menagerie of corpses – mostly humanoid, but some animal – Alizabeth is a blunt instrument – hulking, muscular, unstoppable. Working in tandem, the doctor and his wife make a fearsome and frightening combination.

Campaigns

All Hail Yog

  • The Child: Dr. Hughbert was among the four Marked tasked with kidnapping Princess Nimria from the wood elven kingdom of Cymbia. Interrupted in the midst of a romantic dinner with Alizabeth, he appeared – along with his fellow champions – before the Vessel in the Spires of Yogoth. He began by chumming it up with the Vessel, pleading for its release, and, when Yog arrived, begged the Black Star to permit him to bring his wife along on the mission. True to his erratic nature, he leapt into the Fissure and was rejoined by Alizabeth in the Greenguard Mountains. In the Wombwood, it was oddly Dr. Hughbert who spoke the most with the elven border patrol and, invoking the Shadow Network, gained the villains an escort to the Hidden Palace. Infusing Alizabeth with a jump serum, Dr. Hughbert and his wife leapt into Vaer Quethrolas, smashing and bellowing their way through its border defenses. Along the way, Alizabeth tore a few guards apart and Dr. Hughbert, falling from her back into the branches of a smaller tree, debated the merits of fashioning a saddle for his beloved. Once the elves retreated into the Bastion Tree, Dr. Hughbert provided Desdemonia with her faux-antidote to dupe the elven dynasts. During the final battle, Dr. Hughbert, Alizabeth and Erick fought the ironwood tree in the nursery, the mad artificer injecting his golem with a growth serum to further increase her size. When Agnoment was felled, Dr. Hughbert struggled through the battle to revivify them, leaping over a platoon of palace guards. Alizabeth, meanwhile, was shoved off the drawbranch, fell one hundred feet and somehow survived to climb her way back onto the tree. Together, the pair of them escaped with their comrades, the screeching child in tow.
  • The Covenant: Dr. Hughbert was among the four Marked summoned atop the conquered Gatehouse in Borson 897. When the summons came, he was at the most critical stage of an experiment – to revivify his beloved Alizabeth with a burst of lightning. He was therefore morose to receive the summons, though he did show some interest in Azathomet and the rumors he’d heard about mystery-shrouded Thanatos. When prompted by Yog, he agreed to fashion a new wing for the wounded Skoura. Upon arriving at the slaughterhouse, he attempted to calm the anxious Shim, was delighted to be reunited with Alizabeth – in full working order – and immediately got to work crafting the dragon a gruesome new appendage. It was Dr. Hughbert’s peerless research that uncovered many important facets of the Quorum’s layout and design – the spell-dampening, the underground warrens and the skylight. The night before the attack, the Doctor and Desdemonia crept through the city, scaled the cliffs – via the use of his spider climb serum – and lurked in wait atop the dome for the leaders to arrive. During the attack, the Doctor employed every trick in his bag while Alizabeth, crashing through the skylight with Skoura, claimed two of the leaders – Athalia the Second and the Lord Mayor Osvaldo. She briefly went berserk when her beloved was vanished by a maze spell but they were swiftly reunited. As the battle raged, the Doctor leapt down to join the fray. Activating his blur mechanism, he spent much of the fight healing Alizabeth, keeping her on her feet. When the leaders were finally vanquished, the lovebirds attempted to leap away but, without a saddle, the Doctor kept falling from Alizabeth’s back. Once he was securely grappled, the Doctor cast injected her with his growth serum and it was an enlarged Alizabeth who leapt across the city’s rooftops. After reconvening in the slaughterhouse, the villains elected to escape their separate ways. To slip out of the city, Dr. Hughbert called upon old contacts and navigated the sewers to freedom. Back atop the Gatehouse, he and his fellows were punished for their failure by a displeased Yog.
  • The Ritual: In 898 4A, Dr. Hughbert was among the four villains tasked with brokering an alliance with Hadar. In the middle of a very delicate procedure – to replace his arm with a mechanical prosthetic, the Doctor was whisked away to the Houses of Enigma at quite an inopportune moment. Ernst helped him cauterized his severed stump while Smuj offered, somewhat less helpfully, to devour him. Once reunited with Alizabeth and his new mechanical arm, the Doctor busied himself in researching the ritual they were tasked to perform. When the villains accosted Witherby for his withered tongue, Dr. Hughbert held the wight down while Alizabeth guarded the door. During the unicorn hunt, the doctor and his beloved – along with Ernst and his retainers – herded the beast into the ambush. Upon arriving at Mount Masarthaga, Dr. Hughbert was the most hesitant about summoning Hadar but ultimately decided to lead the chant in place of Vexatia. When Hadar’s ravening hunger descended upon the mountaintop, Dr. Hughbert and Alizabeth both succumbed to its madness, chewing one another while their companions fought for their lives. When the Doctor broke free from the spell, he was able to cast enlarge on Alizabeth and even to seize the Starsphere in his mechanical arm. During the negotiation, the Doctor proved more hindrance than help, occasionally attempting to lead the bargaining despite his subpar interpersonal skills. Hughbert continued to hold the Starsphere until the villains returned to the Houses of Enigma and he could place it upon the pedestal.
