Sankari Human

Sankari are human-animal hybrids genetically engineered for environments that would otherwise be hostile to junya and visesi humans. Sankari are visually different from other humans, having some animal features, but they have each been carefully modified to avoid breaking caste laws.   The sankari are all created using the same engineering methods, but since they each use a different animal as a base, they end up as different from each other as junya are from them. Sankari are a common sight in the galaxy and they are treated with respect by most.

Basic Information

Genetics and Reproduction

Sankari can reproduce with Junya and with other Sankari of the same "species". A frog Sankari and a dog Sankari, for example, are very unlikely to produce viable offspring. Sankari-Visesi mixes are unusual, but they do exist, creating mysterious Viskari.

Civilization and Culture

History

The Years of Regrettable Action  saw a chilling effect in the field of genetic engineering even decades afterward. But in the growing Federation, in the frontiers where Earth was distant, necessity made for boldness. The oil rich planet of Undine necessitated workers who could withstand the murderous heat and humidity. A joint effort by corporate labs created the beduka, human-frog hybrids carefully engineered to be complaint with Caste Law. Initially sensationalized in media, the creation of the first sankari  opened the floodgates. As colonies made their own specialized sankari, on Earth people were genetically altering their children to be more like pets - dog sankari and cat sankari soon followed.   Nearly every extant earth animal has some sankari variant, though the population of ring-tailed lemur sankari is minuscule. Sankari are often categorized as "work" sankari and "companion" sankari (depending on the purpose of their creation) despite having no bearing after initial creation. The companion sankari (kudra, manjara, garuda, etc) and the work sankari (beduka, dregana, vanara, seli, etc) all find reasons to look down upon one another. The hatti are a special case as their creation was for spiritual reasons rather than practical or aesthetic.
