Lizard Sankari
Lizard sankari (better known as dregana) are human-lizards hybrids. Able to withstand temperatures that would roast a human, dregana prefer arid, hot conditions. They are equally at home in a sun-baked desert as the overheating engine room of a large starship.
Dregana Traits
- Infravision: Dregana can see heat, halving illumination penalties for attacking warm targets.
- Bite: Dregana have a powerful bite that can do Strength + d4 damage.
- Toughness: Dregana have a literal thick skin that can shield them from blows. They add +1 to their tougness.
- Desert-Adapted: Dregana do well in arid, hot climates. They have +4 to resist heat, and take 4 less damage from fire.
- Semi-Coldblooded: Dregana are only partly warm-blooded and are vulnerable to low temperatures. They have -4 to rolls to resist cold, and take 4 more damage from cold sources.
- Carnivore: Plant matter provides dregana with very little nutritional value. They need to eat meat.
- Slow: Dregana are ponderous. They suffer a -1 to pace.
Basic Information
Ecology and Habitats
Lizard sankari can withstand temperatures of up to 50 degree Celsius without discomfort. Beyond that, they can tolerate up to 80 degree as long as the air is dry. Not even beduka can withstand temperatures that hot.
Where soft-skinned people avoid, lizard sankari live. Dregana settlements can appear in the middle of deserts. By habit, most dregana are nocturnal.
Civilization and Culture
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Lizard sankari have few pretensions about being cultural. Dregana families are focused on the every day reality of surviving and making money. Living cheap and saving is the dregana way. Any creative or group activities are performed without much ceremony or fanfare. Some beer and a harmonica is enough entertainment for most. Dregana with creativity usually leave their communities for big cities and cultural melting pots.
History
Even during the Undine War, corporate interests were beginning to see the frog sankari as something of a failure. The tree frogs were hard to control, but there was still a need for them as there were planets that were too hot for junya colonists.
The lizard sankari were created as a replacement workforce. While the lizards were a "success" as far as the corps were concerned, their complacency had a lot more to do with labor laws tightening up in the 23rd century. After retirement, the dregana took their state-mandated pensions and settled on arid land they could get cheap. A famous joke goes, "If you want to know where the dregana live, turn over a rock." Their enclaves are usually located in inexplicable places and all across the Federation, but rarely are there enormous concentrations in a single place.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Frog sankari are lizard sankari are routinely compared to one another - which is difficult not to given the dregana owe their existence to the Undine War. As a result, a lot of dregana talk shit about the beduka. The beduka, for their part, don't acknowledge the comparison in the first place.
