The First Succubus War

It was a time of conflict in ways that few had thought of. While in the fields, battles were fought with sword, bow and magic; at home battles were fought with fear, deception and allure. It was far from an ordinary war because so few were safe due to The Tumult, but now your husband, wife and children could not be trusted in your own house.
— Chronicle of Ninian
Long ago during the most unstable times for a young Nekuram there was no end to troubles, especially during The Tumult. With border conflicts and small countries fighting each other, few had the chance to react when the Succubus attacked. In what was an explosion, succubi in all the countries of eastern Narzuvim began to take action, taking towns and villages under their control, charming nobility and all manner of important people while also attacking noble holdings. Nekuram's king, Éngrim II, was able to muster his forces in time to establish peace and hold in most of the then-capital region of Nekuram. What few knew was that The First Succubus War was only the start of what would be the start of a series of conflicts known as the Succubus Wars.

Raid, disorder, revolt or worse?

Nekuram was relatively young at the time and faced both internal and external strife. While Tatarus was the main external threat to everyone, few saw succubus as a problem. They raided and took slaves but were never to the scale of Tatarus raids in terms of lives lost and damages. In addition, the succubi did not cooperate beyond their own families.
It started when news of trouble reached King Éngrim in the capital. It was common for Nekuram's border territory to have problems with skirmishes and hostility. People had started to fight each other in spontaneous outbursts starting on the western border close to The Tarus Plains. What was unusual was the nature of the conflicts seemed to be more internal than external. News that it was not the Tatarus started a few days later and people in the capital started to go missing in addition to also being hostile towards each other. Then on the Anoadday in the third week of Urill, the succubi attacked.
The sky was brightly coloured that day, with no magic, no clouds. A vibrant blue that I remember ever since. Because then dark figures appeared in it, the winged beings of lust and charm. It was perhaps what saved us that day.
— Account from subject in the capital

They have such allure that few are able to resist. If it is magic or racial, none of us knows. They are dangerous, that is for sure...
— Nailé Ingrees, priest of Krarkos.
The king and his Royal Nekuraith Guard with the aid of several strong spellcasters and mages were able to repel this attack. Having charmed thousands of Necur, many lives were lost and many eyes were opened to the succubi's abilities and the threat they posed to everyone. King Éngrim acted with a thorough imprisonment of all succubi to ensure the capital would not falter while he prepared to defend Nekuram. Meanwhile, the succubi's leader Amélan felt the loss as she now had a war starting.

War of Charm and Seduction

Due to the failed attack and their inability to take control over vital points around Nekuram's centre, King Éngrim was able to secure his dominion quickly enough to force succubi eastwards and into smaller pockets. Due to their ability to fly and the extra manoeuvrability given by it, however, these pockets could escape their camps with their loot and slaves in a hurry. The Succubus Amélan also had the command of Dragonphoenixes, something that made battles against the largest pocket in the west much harder to deal with. Éngrim was able to secure the larger populated areas while the noble levies kept the pockets enclosed or close them completely if they were able to. As the first year came to a close, the west and north towards the mountains were secured. The winter brought a long-lasting stalemate.

It was hard to think clearly when under their... "spells". Now we know it had little with magic to do... but she... she did not control me. I just desired her instead of my wife.
— Damren Gustflow, baron.
Amélan did not halt her efforts. She and several strong succubi were able to infiltrate, seduce or kidnap several high- and low-nobility males. Some of these families hesitated to aid their king in the war afterwards in fear of what would happen to their kin, brothers, sons and even in two known cases, husbands. King Éngrim soon found himself doubting other closer allies, among them the neighbour in the south, Dehainn, controller of the large town Galerug.
These doubts did stem from the fact that Dehainn reluctantly aided with their forces to defeat Amélan and the succubi. This became more apparent when they refused to participate in a meeting later the next year, 31 V.D. Éngrim sent an envoy to Galerug to ask why only for the envoy to be almost killed in a prepared ambush by the succubi. When the envoy reached Galerug, it turned out that the king had been charmed. The envoy also discovered that the culprit was none other than the king's wife who was a succubus. The envoy was able to take control of Galerug with the aid of the town's inhabitants and disloyal nobles when the truth was revealed. The king and his wife were able to escape further south according to the written record but never returned.
After this incident, Éngrim put forward an ultimatum to his allies, vassals and subjects: Fight against the succubi or become slaves, subjugated or dead when they take over.

A final struggle

The year dragged on in a tug-of-war between the two sides. Éngrim was able to gather enough support to amass an army for a final decisive battle. Amélan, despite her best efforts it seems, had not that chance. Many succubi had lost their lives and the fervour that they had at the start were flattering faster the longer the large-scale war continued. When the final battle came, the succubi's resistance were "lacking" according to the accounts of the time. Charm and seduction failed as the Nekurian army fought with iron and arrow.
As the summer ended, the succubi surrendered, and Amélan and her closest were captured. Their reasoning for the attack had been the competition for essences, food and slaves that the succubi families needed to survive. Many of them, Amélan included, lived by the border with Tatauren and other threats regularly diminished the standard of living and the trust of Nekuram's leaders. They only wanted what had been "their needs". In the end, it had cost Amélan two sisters and three daughters among her closest family, with an additional 1,500 succubi and another 4,000 other Nekur having been killed. The countryside had lost several fortified towns to disorder and revolts during the two years that the conflict had taken place. Some villages had been robbed of all their men, enslaved or killed, forcing women to find new partners or try living on without any. Those who came back were changed, forced or otherwise to be food and pleasure for the succubi. Amélan and four others of the twelve family leaders that started it all were spared and imprisoned in Nekuram's capital, the others were executed or already dead.
Even with a victory, the consequences were harsh for all. Distrust in relations strained to separations, people started to depopulate the population centres when arable lands became free for the taking. It was a moral loss for Nekuram as it seemed to take steps back towards friction and disputing internally even with a strong monarch leading them all. Contemporary accounts tell, however, that Èngrim became a much more cautious and unhappy man.
We knew each other most of our lives. We were partners from the start you could say. But what Amélan and the Succubus did to him I don't know. He constantly lost himself in thoughts as if he hesitated on what he should have done if what he had done was wrong. He would come some days to my chamber where he would simply sit by the fire, sharing no words... as if he thought she was still out there, or in the very room with him perhaps?
— Queen Lainna, wife of Éngrim

Consequences to what end?

Amélan and the perpitrators of the large scale conflict that became the First Succubus War, according to scholars and testimonies of the time, pointed the food and living problems as the main reason for the sudden escalation. However, it has been questioned that Amélan were speaking the truth. The Succubus population was to begin with not to large over all of Nekuram and no laws, as it would be afterwards, restricted them from their needs. In fact some scholars even try to point out that Amélan wanted the war to happen to present the threat of Succbus to the nobility and leadership for having neglected them for so long. One can only say that this would have had its real affect. Long term wise Succubus was from this point on viewed as sexual preditors, kidnappers and potential beasts. This stigma, over 2,000 years later, has significantly lessened. Yet dispite that fact, succubi are constantly suspected due to their nature, even if better understood today than at the time.

Contempory accounts

I was kept bound in a bed, forced to have sex with several succubi each day. I was not charmed, I was aware of it the whole time... it was a unending pleasure, and I never want it back.
— Unknown freed captive
...It change everything. If there is one event I will say marked my regin it was the day the Succubus made the decision to attempt a mass enslavement and creation of their own luscious garden. A country led by succubus... pleasures and... life.
— From the royal private collection

Why was Amélan spared?

At the end of the war Amélan and her close allies and friends were captured. They made little effort to resist when the king's soldiers chained them and blinded them with cloth to prevent them from using their natural charm-casting abilities. A majority fo them were executed when the trial was held against them. However, their shown leader was spared.
When they were put on trial in front of the King Éngrim the judgments delivered were server to all of the Succubus. Tails cut off, infertility rites and executions were proceded to the majority. Amélan were spared any such treatment and was instead imprissoned in the capital for life. Some believe it to be a last chance charm that affected the king or that his mind was already struggeling. Whatever was going through his mind when he lay the judgment on her, no one wanted to question him and never did afterwards.
