Askersound Character in Nimenra | World Anvil

Askersound

One does not travel without at least giving Askersound a small prayer, or the hope He sees to that the journey one travels at least does not end in tragedy. I tend to at least do it once on a journey. He is no guide, after all, simply someone who makes sure that the river flows...
— Everam, Teller of Nimenra
Small rivers dot the maps of Nimenra and give life to population centers of Humans, Dwarves and Demons. The one who makes sure that the water flows and allows people to live is Askersound, the God of the Sea and Rivers. In myth and legends Askersound tends to stay in the background, allowing the world to continue with little intervention from Him. He does tend to have a temperament at times and is quick to act when angered similar to Orios in some ways. He shows himself to be a rationalist, a God who thinks before acting too harshly when provoked or angered. These two opposites of Him paint Him as fickle, comparing Him to the seas outside of Nimenra's coasts.

The God of the Sea and Rivers

Even with the reputation as the God of Travellers and Poverty, Askersound is most known as the God of the Sea and Rivers. With His will, He guides the waters of both to prosperity for some and disaster for others. His ability to control the water makes him well-liked and feard.
He shares several connections to Rhyn as They both give life to nature with Their powers. They share the responsibility of being deities closely related to poverty, even if Reliona and Nilari more acts as the poor's protectors through Their followers. Rhyn and Askersound also holds little value to wealth in their appearances. Rhyn gave Askersound the aspect of Poverty.

His Worship

Few dedicate themselves to the God of the Sea and Rivers. Mainly He is often compared to Rhyn, the highest of the Eight, due to mentioned connections and shared similarities. His dedication to protecting travellers also tends to be outshone by Orios despite the latter not being connected at all with protecting. Despite this, Askersound has some temples dedicated to him often built by the rivers of Telamirein. Sacrificing foodstuff is a common way for one to connect to Him, with fishermen offering part of their catch so He can give them safety on their next journey. Small way shrines along The Grey Road can be dedicated to Him, with coins placed along with fishing hooks to pray for Askersound's protection. When building a new house some tend to make a Oar and Wave symbol hidden into the foundation so He protects it from moisture damage.

The Three Lessers

Askersound, Umberem and Mirgir are all three worshipped less than the other Gods of The Eight Pantheons. This stems from the fact that little is known of Them and what They did during the War of The Gods. Myths with any of Them usually focus on one of the other Eight and seldom do any have Askersound as the central character. Some have also pointed it out that these three Gods have very narrow and small aspects and domains that They represent. Others are quick to point to the fact that They, Askersound in perticular, does not seem to have asked His followers for anything.
Askersound is the largest of The Lesser Three with His relation to the sea, rivers and prosperity. He is also more prominent in imagery when the Eight is gathered and represented in various artwork and myths.

Description:
Askersound is tall and slender, always one of the tallest when depicted with other Gods or beings. Prominent, thick eyebrows give the feeling of a stern man with a long beard. He is aged, never depicted as younger than a man in their 50s dressed in a long toga but still allowing his feet to be visible which stands on sandals or similar simple footwear. Sometimes he is depicted in simple light, metal armour when participating in battles.
I can tell you several tales that He would not like you to hear about. Askersound have and always will be in the background of all stages. He provides little security to Humans and Demons.
