Aria Mortifax

The daughter of one of the Sorcerer-Kings of old, Aria Mortifax was the light in her father's eyes, until a tradition he had been part of devising robbed him of her.

Life and Death

Aria was born the child of an unnamed concubine and the Overlord or, as known by his birth name, Constance Mortifax. She and her mother were the only two individuals the cruel Overlord ever loved, going so far as to keep Aria in the dark about how his empire was built upon the suffering of his subjects.

Her early childhood was spent in the highest spire of the Forlorn Kingdom, where her father had made her a room of her own in which she lacked for nothing, neither entertainment, sustenance nor love. When she turned six, the adjacent Great Forest was beginning to show signs of the Adversary's corruption that would eventually transform it into the Black Forest, which prompted her father to enact a decree stating that each and every day one of his subjects would be chosen at random and magically exiled into the forest as a sacrifice to the sleeping god, in an effort to appease it.

Then, before she had turned eleven, her father's magic had chosen her and she was thrust into the damned forest, alone and defenseless. Constance, furious at his subordinates for allowing such a thing to happen, executed them all before searching for Aria in the forest for weeks. It is safe to assume the poor girl perished in the hands of Hatelings shortly after being transported into the forest.

This caused her father to relinquish the throne and dedicate the rest of his life to the eventual destruction of the Adversary, donning the mantle of the Ashen Baron and putting his considerable magical might and malice to use in his mad quest to slay a god.

Legacy

In the Funereal Manor, the moving lair of her father, there is a room tucked away in the deepest recesses of the magical abode that is sealed and protected from all intrusion and the door of which only opens with a key that is in the Baron's personal possession.

Using the magical arts employed by Remembrancers, the Baron has recreated Aria's room in painstaking detail, down to Aria herself, a ghost of the past in forever slumber, sleeping perpetually as the small music box on the nearby table plays a rendition of the Eternal Hymn.

When the Baron feels that his mission is impossible, that he is facing an insurmountable challenge, he retreats into this room and sits at the side of his daughter's memory, listening to the quiet melody of the music box. It is during these rare moments that, if anyone was there to witness it, one could see the Ashen Baron shed a tear.
