Remembrancer

In Pluthem, those who wrestle the Tapestrum Arcanum to submission for their personal gain are common, but sometimes rare individuals wield magic solely for the benefit of others. Remembrancers are an example of the latter.

Soothing memories

A remembrancer is, simply put, a mage that specializes in the isolation and encapsulation of memories that linger in the fabric of the Tapestrum. These men and women are invited to the homes of the recently departed, where they harvest the location for memories that can then be relived by those left behind in an effort to ease their pain.
For the grieving, the opportunity to relive cherished moments with their departed loved ones is a balm for the soul, offering comfort and closure in the face of loss. Through the artistry of the Remembrancers, grief is oft transformed into a poignant celebration of life.

Path of a Remembrancer

Most do not choose to become remembrancers, instead arriving to that point almost by accident. Mages who do good for others discover that kindness is its own reward, and this goodwill intensifies over time, until the mage comes to realize that they want to devote their life to the helping and supporting of others. This usually means that they either join the Enlightened Few and devote themselves to research in hopes of improving life in general for everyone, or they choose the more intimate path of personal support, becoming healers or remembrancers.
Being a remembrancer is not an easy task, however. Emotion tends to linger in the Tapestrum, and it takes a shrewd mind to pluck out the positive while leaving and ignoring the negative so the memories that are created provide healing and closure instead of further anguish. The practice is a delicate art, requiring a profound understanding of both the tangible and intangible aspects of human experience.

Methodology

It is hard not to think the remembrancers purposeless when one can retreat into their memories and seek succor there by themselves, but this viewpoint arises from a position of ignorance.
A remembrancer does not simply remind the client of an event, they make them relive it, as if they were actually there and it was all happening again. The sights, sounds, feelings and even scents of the memory are transmitted back to the client in perfect clarity. Many clients weep openly when they watch what is, to them, their departed loved one in the flesh and can even touch them again should the memory allow for it.
The weeping that often accompanies these sessions is not a sign of sorrow alone; it is a culmination of all the emotional baggage that the clients are still carrying. Even though memories are just that and cannot interact with the clients beyond those interactions they made at the time the memory was created, being able to just see the deceased alive and well has immense and transformative healing power. The sensation of being enveloped in the warmth of a long-lost embrace, hearing the familiar cadence of a beloved's voice and the words that proclaim undying love brings a sense of comfort and closure that simply reminiscing by oneself won't provide.
The actual method of extracting memories from the tapestry is a complicated arcane process, one during which the remembrancer must be cognizant of the delicate balance of emotion within the Tapestrum. As the remembrancer projects, they enter a meditative state. In this trance-like headspace, they navigate the location within the tapestry, guided by an intuitive understanding of the emotions and experiences imprinted upon it.   The extraction process itself requires a delicate touch and a profound connection to the memories themselves. The remembrancer must discern the nuances of each strand, recognizing the unique energy signatures that distinguish moments of joy from those of sorrow, love from heartache and passion from anger. A mistake in this regard is potentially catastrophic as such mishaps can be emotionally tumultuous for both the remembrancer and the grieving party, with uncontrolled emotions from the location's past surging forth, unbridled and unfiltered.
