Constance Mortifax
Constance Mortifax is without a doubt one of the most influential people currently alive on the face of Nascindor. He is better known to historians as the Overlord, the moniker he chose to go by when he reigned as a Sorcerer-King, and now he spreads his wickedness as the dread Ashen Baron.
Growing up as the only son of his father, more was demanded of him than his peers who had siblings. Every failure was rewarded with pain, and Constance began to resent those who should have been closest to him. At the age of thirteen, Constance took his first life, that of his father. For the crime of patricide, he was exiled from the tribe and left to fend for himself in the arid steppe of the Mourning Plateau.
It was in that desolate place that, when he was dying of severe dehydration and malnutrition, a great black bird perched upon a nearby rock to observe his passing. In an unforeseen stroke of destiny, Constance locked eyes with the bird and in its gaze he saw infinity, the impossible made possible. He saw the Tapestrum Arcanum, and in that moment he knew he had to know more.
Forcing himself to his shaky legs, he used a sturdy stick as a crutch as he dragged himself across the plains, all the while that great black bird followed his progress from the sky. Each time Constance dreamt, he dreamt of the mysteries of magic, of how to enter that enigma he saw in the birds eyes. How to tame it. Over time, through this dreaming tutelage, he learned to project, becoming one of the first to ever do so.
Harnessing the powers of the Tapestry, Constance healed his wounds and made himself better. Stronger and faster than the average man, and thrice as durable. Journeying into the lands beyond the Mourning Plateau, he found other tribes of humans who he brought under his will with his newfound powers. Most simply pledged themselves before him at the slightest demonstration of the mysteries of the Tapestry, while others were forced to bend the knee.
With an amassing horde under his command, the first thing Constance did was raze his childhood home to the ground, burning the village and planting the foundations of his empire in its smoldering remains, which would come to span the entirety of the border of the Great Forest. He would go on to adopt the moniker of Overlord and take his place amongst the Sorcerer-Kings, his rule defined by his cruelty to his subjects who he made to work day and night.
It was during this period of time that the Great Forest began to show the first symptoms of the Adversarys corruption, the first Hatelings beginning to emerge from the twisted woods that Constances empire encircled. In an effort to appease the forest and the slumbering god within, Constance cast a spell that would exile a randomly chosen citizen of his empire into the darkening forest each day at noon.
These sacrifices continued for several years before, one fateful day, the magic he had wrought with his own hands chose Aria and his dear daughter was expelled into the blackened woods. Immediately after hearing of this, Constance attempted to undo the spell but it was too late. For weeks, he personally led expeditions into the forest, losing hundreds of men to the horrors roaming the cursed place in a vain effort to find the light of his life.
Struck with unimaginable grief, Constance withdrew into his personal chambers. There his sorrow festered within his heart, swelling into a rage and intense resentment towards the Adversary. Giving up his empire to his closest advisor, he resolved to dedicate the rest of his life to the eventual destruction of the fell deity. Leaving behind everything he had achieved, Constance Mortifax ceased to be the Overlord and became the Ashen Baron.
Rise to Power
A mere few years after the Godfall, Constance was born in a small community of humans inhabiting the Great Forest. These were a savage people with savage beliefs, with every newborn brutalized in a series of rituals with religious significance to the tribe. This was true for Constance as well, and he suffered greatly at the hands of his parents before their backwards beliefs were satisfied.Growing up as the only son of his father, more was demanded of him than his peers who had siblings. Loss
In the heyday of his empire, it came to pass that Constance fell in love with a concubine of his, one whose name the history books do not recall. He sired a child with the woman, a little girl he named Aria. This daughter of his is said to be the only thing the hard-hearted Overlord ever truly loved, and he went to great lengths to care for her every need.It was during this period of time that the Great Forest began to show the first symptoms of the Adversarys corruption, the first Hatelings beginning to emerge from the twisted woods that Constances empire encircled.
