Whitereach

General Description

Whitereach was a major fortification that served as the headquarters of the Scourge, a prominent and powerful faction of that time. It now lies in a state of ruin and decay and although a popular destination to visit, the natural erosion of the cliffs and damage to walkways and stairs mean access is challenging and incredibly unsafe.

Location

The location of Whitereach was chosen mostly for its strategic advantages as opposed to any local valuable resources. With the island surrounded almost entirely by rough seas and jagged towering cliffs, any attackers would have a tough time simply getting ashore, let alone the arduous task of walking several miles up steep inclines to reach the fortress.

History

In 3197 the Scourge needed a place to run their empire from and this was it. Built from the white rock of the island, this structure was so tall and large that it could be seen from anywhere else in the archipelago. A large number of slaves meant that Whitereach was built very quickly, however, some have speculated that the unskilled labor would eventually lead to the severe loss of structural integrity the fort suffered in later years. Construction finished in the year 3200 and it would remain in place for just over 400 years before showing major signs of aging and decay.   3629 would see several damning events that lead to both the downfall of the Scourge and Whitereach. The fortress was becoming hard to maintain and repair and knowledge of its decline in strength began to spread not just through the islands but also to the mainland. Infighting within the Scourge was at an all-time high, nobody with any power or authority trusted anyone else and so many smaller groups loyal to different individuals within the faction started to emerge.   Taking advantage of this, the Redtooth Raiders led a bold strike to try and take the fortress, and all of the bounty inside for themselves. After learning of vast rebellions forming in the area they disguised themselves as common traders hiding weaponry underneath much-needed food supplies and leading a surprise attack with powerful explosives they gained access to the fort. The Raiders and the Scourge both suffered heavy losses but the people of the islands took this as their one chance and led hundreds of villagers, farmers, hunters, and guards into the fortress to fight casuing any remaining faction members to flee if they could.   The fort was held for a number of years under a few different parties but eventually abandoned completely when one of the towers and a significant chunk of the outer wall fell into the sea. The structure has contined to deteriorate and been empty for the last 300 years.
