Muxen

General Description

The Muxen is a legendary creature, a sort of watery hag-like figure with countless tentacles, covered in seaweed and sea creatures. They appear at night to drag naughty children into the ocean never to be seen again. It is a popular tale told by parents to their children to keep their behaviour in line.

History

Variations of this story have been around for thousands of years, however, the common one that exists today is more recent, roughly a few centuries old. One of the main uses this tale has is to keep children away from the sea and beaches with all of the dangers that come with them, strong currents, wild animals and dangerous pirates. The very young are often confined inside until they are mature enough to make decisions and use common sense on their own.

Legend

The story goes that a sea witch named Muxen has a lair among the corals, she has the ability to read the minds of children and know if they have been well behaved or not. When they sense a misbehaving child, that child will start to have nightmares or bad dreams as the Muxen feasts on their energy. If they have been repeatedly or increasingly bad, she will emerge from the ocean in the dead of night, using her many slimy tentacles to slither towards their house, crawl in through a window or small crack, and wrap a tentacle around their mouth to keep them quiet and quickly drag them back to their underwater lair.
