Thrain II

Thrain II

Biological parent of Thorin Oakenshield   Thrain was born in the Grey Mountains, but left to return to Erebor when his Father THROR returned there and became King Under the Mountain.  In 2746 his son Thorin Oakenshield was born.  But the good times were not to last. He fought bravely when Smaug, The Magnificent fell on the The Lonely Mountain.  He was able to escape and followed his Father to the @HILLS OF DUNLAND where they were reduced to poverty in this land with few resources.     About 2790 T.A. his Father Thror had grown intolerant of their life in DUNLAND and gave Thrain his RING OF POWER, a map of the Lonely Mountain, and a Key to a secret door into the mountain.  He then left to find wealth with only one companion NAR.  In a few months Nar returned and let Thrain know that his Father had gone to MORIA and been killed by the Orc King AZOG.     This lead Thrain to call for all Dwarves to join them in setting right this slight against the head of the line of Durin I the eldest house of dwarves.  The Dwarves did come, and they fought a long war (2793-2799) THE WAR OF DWARVES AND ORCS .  It was a long a bloody war fought mostly underground in the mines of the Misty Mountains.  Although it ended in a victory for the Dwarves at the BATTLE OF AZANULBIZAR , the dwarves were so battered and the orcs though reduced still held Moria that the Dwarves all returned to their homelands.     Thrain returned to the Hills of Dunland, but soon decided it was time to take real action, and lead his people to the NORTHERN BLUE MOUNTAINS in the far west.  At first he was happy to be in a new opportunity where things looked to be more likely to be prosperous.  However by 2841 T.A. he decided to scout out a return to the Lonely Mountain.  This was likely fueled by his Ring of Power.  He left with a small group of followers, including BALIN and DWALIN to head for Wilderland.  One night in 2845 T.A. he was taken by forces of Sauron.  At that time Sauron was posing as the Necromancer of Dol Gulder.  Thrain's fate was unknown, and his companions returned to the BLUE MOUNTAIN HALL with this sad news.     His final fate is still not known, but Gandalf, the Grey came upon him while scouting out DOL GULDER.  Thrain was only partially aware so harsh had been the treatment he had received.  He gave Gandalf a map and key for the Lonely Mountain.  He asked him to give it to his son although he could not remember his own name or his son's.  Gandalf was able to determine that Thorin was the son and gave him the map and key and helped him on his expedition to the Lonely Mountain.
