Sauron

A Maia that broke with ILLUVITAR and joined the discord of MELKOR . He was one of the leaders in the rebellion and fled with Melkor when he fled the BLESSED REALM with the SIMARILS . He was always the Chief Lieutenant of Melkor, and when he was chained and thrown into the great void, he resorted to lies and treachery to secure his not being put in the same state as his master.
During the SECOND AGE he traveled widely about Middle Earth as ANNATAR using his always astounding talent as a smith to teach the making of magic rings to Elves, Dwarves, and Men how to make rings of power for themselves.
Later his evil crafting came forth in his ability to control the RINGS OF POWER . He worked in the East and South building an Empire with its capital at BARAD-DUR . Eventually revealing himself he tried to seize the Western Lands, and thus came the WAR OF ELVES AND MEN . Eventually he was defeated at the BATTLE OF DAGOLAD after which he disappeared and has not been found since.
