Illuvitar's Second Children created with the GIFT OF MORTALITY. Humans only awoke when the Sun was brought fourth as a light source for the world. They awoke in the far east and began their trek towards the rising sun. After centuries some reached BELERIAND, and there they were found by the Elves. In Quenyan they are called ATANI, and in SINDARIN EDAIN. These terms were applied to those men that reached the west. The wild men of the far east were not included. Illuvitar's plan was for men to populate and live throughouth Middle-Earth. The ost long lived of Men were descended from the Half Elf Elros who became the first Ruler of the Kingdom of Numenor and leader of the Dunedain. These Men who were instrumental in helping the Elves defeat MORKOTH in the WAR OF THE SIMARILS were granted a land between BELERIAND and the Undying Lands. Due to their close proximity to these sacred lands their life spans and stature grew. After the fall of NUMENOR they came to the lands of the West and established the Kingdoms of Gondor and Arnor.
Other men stayed in the lands of Middle Earth and did not change as the Dunedain had done. These men make up most of the population of Middle Earth. In the West the peaceful groups that stand against Sauron are the Men of Rohan , Men of Bree , Arnor , Gondor , Woodmen of Wilderland, Beornings , Bardings , Laketown .
