Dwarves

Created by AULE, THE SMITH, one of the Ainur. Who had grown tired of waiting for ILLUVITAR to bring forth the Children of Illuvitar so he crafted his own, so that he would have someone to teach his craft. So, like their creator they are short and sturdy, and made for work at the smithy or with stone. These creatures though were limited by their creators powers. He could only give life to them as long as he focused on their living. When his thoughts turned to another project they would freeze and do nothing until his thoughts returned.   Illuvitar found out about these creatures, and he asked Aule to destroy them. When Illuvitar saw them bracing for the death blow of Aule's hammer he had mercy on them. His heart softened and he decided he would adopt them. He told Aule not to create any more creatures. He promised ot breath life into them when the time came for them to appear in Middle Earth.   So he had Aule take the SEVEN FATHERS AND MOTHERS OF THE DWARVES and place them deep underground.  There Illuvitar had them sleep until the Elves had come to Middle Earth, then the Dwarves would awaken in their mountain caverns.   Durin I was the first of the Dwarves to awaken. He is considered the Father of the Dwarves, though 6 others awoke later. Each Father and Mother left their underground chamber and they wandered the land looking for homes. They each founded one of the SEVEN HOUSES OF THE DWARVES.   Durin I built his house in the Grey Mountains far inland from the coast of BELERIAND, and it was known as Khazad-Dum. Others moved farther west founding the great cities of NORGOD and BELEGOST in the BLUE MOUNTAINS. Durin I's people were largely unaffected by the WARS OF THE FIRST AGE, but those Dwarves that went west played major roles both fair and foul.  Many works of power came from their forges.  Over time Durin I's folk lived throughout the Grey Mountains and moved into the Iron Hills.
