The Battle of Five Armies

This battle was fought over the rights to the hoard of Smaug, The Magnificent . Initially it was to be fought between the Dwarves of Erebor and Dwarves of the Iron Hills against the combined forces of the Men of Laketown and the Elves of Mirkwood . But, before hostilities could begin the Orcs of the Misty Mountains and the Orcs of the Iron Hills attacked with their Wargs and Bats, Giant allies. The Elves, Dwarves, and Men decided to join forces against the foul foes, and with the assistance of the Eagles, Great , they won the day. This led to a peaceful splitting of the hoard.
