The Wind Fields

The Wind Fields are positioned along the Northern Mountains, facing into the Frozen Wastes, as this is one of the windiest regions on Mudewei. Giant wind turbines all over the mountain landscape provide almost all of the power for the settlements within the Ice Flats, and are primarily used to power buildings, shields around settlements, and other major stationary structures.   The Wind Fields are commonly powered down in the process of preparing to migrate, powering only the shields for the duration of High Winter until the Stenza return. This policy is designed to reduce waste and limit the potential damage wind turbines could sustain during the Ice Storms and freak weather events when they occur during the Stenza's absence. When the Stenza return, the common procedure is to assess the turbines for damage, make any needed repairs, and then return the power generation to normal levels.

Purpose / Function

The Wind Fields provide electric power to all the settlements within the Ice Flats.

History

When the Wind Fields were first being planned, after a proof of concept in the Greater Pass, several religious experts from the Greater Pass Stenza ventured to the proposed building site and petitioned the Snow Warrior to allow the project. They reported back to the Droghi Council in Strares that the Stenza would not be allowed to build past the base of the mountains, along with a general sense that the Snow Warrior found the project confusing at best.   With a clear boundary in place, the project could commence. The first wind turbines were clunky affairs that struggled with moderately strong winds, and the first power cells were inefficient and drained quickly. Experiments in the design and capabilities of both led to older models being scrapped for recycling as newer designs replaced them. This pattern continued more or less unchanged until the current models were developed, which cover a sizable chunk of the mountainside but notably do not cross the boundary set out at the project's inception. Power generated by the turbines is limited to Mudewei-bound structures, temporary and permanent, as well as the shields that surround and protect settlements from the environment.

I really like the detail that the Snow Warrior found the concept confusing.

That's what you get when you live in the wilderness and your weirdo neighbors insist on *building* shit and *civilizing* the place.
