Rethi's Revealing Echo Spell in Melyria | World Anvil

Rethi's Revealing Echo

Rethi's Revealing Echo is as mysterious as it's creator, giving a person great insight into their surroundings. It guides the lost, reveals threats and shows secrets for those who know how to use it.

Effect

The caster hums a melody, that travels through the area, returning the caster echoes of the environment. Melody can be heard by anyone whom the spell reaches. The spell affects a spherical area with 45 feet radius, originating from the caster. Sound travels through any materials, nooks, and crannies that sound could usually pass, and soundproof or sound diminishing materials can reduce the area of effect at DMs discretion.

Caster receives a mental map from the area of effect, getting vague ideas about the basic layout of the space regardless can they see it (like the shape of the room, or positioning of furniture) and some information on creatures inside the area. The spell doesn't reveal any details like small objects or appearance of the creatures, simply an estimation of their size and position. The sound might also clue in on details on like the size of a nearby room, the material of the walls, are there mats of the floor or positioning on objects though no details on what those objects are. For example, the caster might be able to tell there is a large, heavy object in the next room, but cannot confirm it as a statue before they have seen it.

If there is a creature in the area of effect that is actively trying to hide/stealth, they must make a stealth check against the caster's casting modifier. If it succeeds, the caster only gets an eerie feeling that there is someone in the space but cannot decipher any further information about the creature's position or size.

During the spell's effect, the caster cannot be surprised attacked by a creature whos position they are aware of.

At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a slot of 4th level or higher, the radius of the area of effect raises with 5 feet.

Manifestation

Caster starts chanting an ancient melody in celestel, which travels through the space. vague, colorless image of the area around forms to the caster's head, like a blueprint made of glass.

Discovery

The spell is unique to the mysterious Professor of Divination Rethi Dreamseer from Silver Shore Academy of Magi. No one knows exactly how they came across it, and where did it come from, yet some speculate that Rethi was simply born with this skill and has since made the spell to share their capabilities with others.

Spell is only given to Rethi's most trusted students.

That's a really cool spell idea - kind of like a celestial, wall-piercing sonar ping!   How come it relies on Celestial? Does it have some sort of essence the spell requires, or something unique to the inventor?

The spells inventor, Rethi, is actually an aasimar. :3 While not said in the description, it's very likely that their celestial blood has something to do with the origin of the spell as well. ^^

Magical sonar ftw! I really love the unique take on a detection spell that you did! This combined with the mystical CSS and colours of Melyria definitely made for a short but fun article!   I have a question though, is there any way of deterring the effects of this spell? Like a special cloaking spell or cloak which hides you from this? And is there any stronger version of this spell which reveals more details about the room? Either ways, ‘‘twas a good read! Congrats tiiri and keep rocking WE!
