Astrensea

Bountiful waters formed from the sky's tears.

"After the death of one child, one simple child, the goddess wept for ten long years. When she finally stopped, there was a sea where once there was a wasteland. There was safety where there had been danger. There was food where once there was nothing. Since then, no child has ever had to go hungry on the shores of the Astrensea."

A Sea Surrounded

The Astrensea fills a basin between Breharan's Spine on the inward side, the Skyfall Marshes on the skyward side, the Salt Flats on the side from which Yaliru comes, and Burim on the last.   This leaves the nation of Tamazee sharing a border only with Burim. Salt and fish - and saltfish - enter Burim and textiles, metals, and other materials return to Tamazee.

Seasons of the Sea

The wind the Orth call Haira has only a weak presence over the Astrensea for her passage is blocked by the Spine. Above that, the presence of such a large body of water moderates the climate extremes in the region - the people of Tamazee refer to this as Astrenza's gift or her warmth.   Even with the advantages the region experiences, there are still seasons which the people have learned to adapt to. In the spring, the waters are at their most raucous for it is during this time that the wild wind makes her appearance. In summer, the sea is bountiful and the weather is often calm making it a perfect season to fish and dry the catch - though among the skies a thunderstorm is never out of the question. Come autumn the people across Breharan begin to prepare for the coming cold and the fish caught and dried in the Astrensea are shipped to faraway places; this is also the season of the annual race, Salt to Stern. Winter arrives slowly and life slows down on the Astrensea, the many birds of the region have left until the spring returns and the fish become less active.

Fish and Skyfish

There are many places on Breharan where there is no reason to distinguish between fish and skyfish because there are no waters from which to harvest the non-sky variety. However, the Astrensea does not border any edge of the sky continent and therefore there is no need to distinguish fish for there are no populations of skyfish in the region.
