Al Folia

Al Folia lies between Everfell to the northwest and the Riverlands to the southeast. It has a temperate climate, with hot summers, mild winters and long growing seasons.

Geography

Al Folia is indeed a fascinating region with its diverse geography, mild climate, and unique ecosystems. The vast prairies and rolling plains provide an ideal habitat for a variety of wildlife, including large herds of grazing animals and the predators that rely on them for sustenance. These plains are a sight to behold, especially when the herds numbering in the millions traverse the land.   The badlands, with their stark beauty and pine trees, offer a striking contrast to the lush grasslands. These arid and rocky regions are home to minotaurs and other creatures that have adapted to this challenging environment. The proximity of these badlands to the fertile prairies creates an intriguing ecological balance.   To the east, the imposing mountain range creates a dramatic backdrop for the region. The constant cap of snow and ice on the peaks feeds the many rivers that flow through the prairie, sustaining the ecosystem below. These mountains are known for their stark beauty and serve as a natural barrier between Al Folia and the neighboring territories.

Ecosystem

Al Folia boasts a rich and diverse ecosystem, with a variety of habitats that support a wide range of flora and fauna. The region's unique geography, including prairies, badlands, mountains, and Lake Valnaki, contributes to its exceptional biodiversity.   Prairies and Grasslands:  The dominant feature of Al Folia, the vast prairies and grasslands, provide an ideal habitat for a multitude of creatures. These grassy expanses are home to enormous herds of grazing animals, such as deer, elk, and bison. These herbivores, in turn, support a healthy population of predators, including wolves, large Dire Bears, and formidable big cats like mountain lions. The prairies create a stunning backdrop with their sea of waving grasses.   Badlands:  The badlands, rocky and arid, create a striking contrast to the lush grasslands. Pine trees dot these rugged landscapes, growing in the poor rocky soil. Amidst the rocky terrain, minotaurs and their tribes thrive as predators of both beasts and humanoids. The badlands provide essential habitats for creatures adapted to harsh conditions.   Mountains:  To the east, the imposing mountains with their perpetual snow caps rise dramatically above the plains. The barren, rocky peaks and steep slopes make it a challenging environment for most life forms. However, the melting snow and ice from these mountains feed the rivers that flow through the prairie below, sustaining the ecosystem.   Lake Valnaki:  In the south, Lake Valnaki stands as a massive inland sea teeming with aquatic life. The lake's crystal-clear waters host a diverse range of fish species, making it a haven for fishermen. Beneath the surface, Tritons and Sea Folk add to the region's uniqueness. Surrounding the lake, lush vegetation and fauna provide an idyllic setting for both tourists and the creatures that call it home.

Ecosystem Cycles

Al Folia is very mild with its weather patterns, and is considered stable for farming or grazing. Occasionally a fearsome tornado will venture further south from Everfell, though these are rare. The herds on the plains move constantly as they gaze off the thick grasses. Some of these herds can be a million creatures strong, and a panicked herd can stampede through a settlement, wrecking homes and buildings.   Mild summers, wet and rainy winters, and a moderate temperature range create favorable conditions for farming and grazing. The vast herds on the plains migrate throughout the year, ensuring the grasslands remain healthy.

Localized Phenomena

Wild Magic Bubbles:  These sporadic occurrences are sources of unpredictable magical effects. Wild magic bubbles manifest at random in various locations throughout Al Folia. When one of these bubbles forms, it can disrupt the functioning of spells and produce strange and unexpected magical phenomena. For example, a fireball spell might transform into a shower of colorful sparks, or a teleportation spell could unexpectedly switch the positions of two creatures. The effects of these bubbles are temporary and typically last only for a brief period, leaving behind a sense of wonder and mystery among the region's inhabitants.   Tornadoes:  During the spring and summer months, Al Folia experiences the occasional tornado. These violent windstorms can form quickly and wreak havoc as they move across the plains. While tornadoes are not exclusive to Al Folia and can occur in other regions, they are more common here due to the flat, open landscape. The residents of Al Folia have adapted to this natural phenomenon by constructing underground shelters to protect themselves and their livestock during tornado outbreaks. These shelters have become a common feature in settlements across the region, and their construction techniques have evolved over time to better withstand the destructive force of tornadoes.   Shifting Fields:  In the heart of the rolling plains, there are areas known as the "Shifting Fields." These fields undergo a peculiar phenomenon, where the layout and arrangement of the grassy terrain change overnight. What was once a meadow of tall grass might transform into a labyrinth of low shrubs and then into a dense thicket of wildflowers, all in the span of a single night. The locals believe that the Shifting Fields are a result of ancient, natural magic embedded in the land. Some say it's the work of forgotten nature deities, while others attribute it to the influence of long-lost druidic rituals. Regardless of the cause, these ever-changing fields have become a subject of intrigue and folklore in Al Folia.   The Shifting Fields are not only a source of wonder but also a challenge for those who rely on the plains for grazing their livestock. Herders must carefully navigate these fields to find suitable grazing grounds for their animals, and they have developed a keen understanding of the patterns and cycles of the shifting terrain. Travelers and adventurers also find these fields both enchanting and perplexing, as they offer a unique navigational challenge in an otherwise flat landscape.   These localized phenomena contribute to the unique character of Al Folia, where both the unpredictability of wild magic and the occasional fury of tornadoes are accepted as part of daily life. Residents have learned to adapt and even find inspiration in these phenomena, embracing the enchantment and challenges they bring to the region.

Snow is a rare occurrence, and the region remains accessible and inviting for travelers throughout the year.   Many people from surrounding regions choose to visit Al Folia, especially Lake Valnaki, to escape extreme weather and enjoy the pleasant climate. Whether for relaxation, recuperation, or simply to bask in the temperate weather, Al Folia's climate is a significant draw for tourists and residents alike.   Lake Valnaki's Influence: Lake Valnaki, the massive inland sea to the south, significantly influences the climate of Al Folia. It acts as a natural temperature regulator, keeping the region's temperatures from reaching extremes. The lake's waters remain relatively warm throughout the year, which helps moderate the temperature of the surrounding areas.   During the winter, the warmth of Lake Valnaki prevents the region from experiencing freezing temperatures, allowing for a longer growing season. In the summer, the lake's cool breezes provide a refreshing respite from the heat of the plains. This unique climatic feature makes Al Folia an attractive destination for travelers seeking a pleasant and temperate climate year-round.   The harmonious interplay between the plains, mountains, and Lake Valnaki creates a climate that is not only comfortable for residents but also ideal for agriculture and outdoor activities. It's no wonder that people from all around are drawn to the region to savor its temperate and inviting atmosphere.

History

A Thousand Years Ago (Before 1999 AE): Al Folia was a region consisting of numerous scattered tribes and clans, each led by their respective chiefs. These tribes often clashed over territory and resources, resulting in a volatile and tumultuous landscape.   2000 - 2200 AE: Over the centuries, some of the more dominant tribes evolved into small kingdoms or chiefdoms. Conflicts between these emerging powers were frequent, leading to shifts in territorial boundaries and ongoing power struggles.   2300 - 2500 AE: The region faced external threats from orc hordes originating in the neighboring Mother's Fingers. These periodic invasions wreaked havoc on Al Folia, forcing its tribes and chiefdoms to unite periodically to fend off the orcish onslaughts.   2850 AE: Despite the persistent internal conflicts, a loose confederation of tribes and chiefdoms was formed to provide collective defense against external threats, particularly the orc invasions. This alliance proved effective in safeguarding Al Folia from further orc attacks.   Present Day (2999 AE): Al Folia remains a region of multiple kingdoms and chiefdoms, each governed by their respective chiefs. While internal disputes continue to arise, the loose confederation established in response to external threats has contributed to maintaining a degree of stability and unity within the region.   Al Folia's history is characterized by its resilience and determination to withstand adversity. The ongoing battles and struggles have shaped the identity of its people, fostering a spirit of independence and adaptability that defines the region today.
