Library

I hope the library has the books I want. The shelves seem empty recently with book withdrawals
— A thought of a visitor on their way to a library.

Location

Libraries are found in even numbered Segments of Birdencaster. As the University is found in Segment 10 there are two libraries. One for the University students and alumni at the University. The other is for the public and University students.   This article is about the libraries open to the public, for the University kind, take a look, here.

History

Due to the technology rewind of The Great Rewind computers and internet are not used. Libraries are therefore a collection of books with an opportunity to look up news from places that are external Birdencaster.

Service Changes

As no computers are used the libraries of the UK have regressed to using the Browne issue system [1]. The system uses multiple cards that a member of the library would have. When they choose a book to lend the member’s card is swapped with the book’s card by the staff member and the due date is put on both cards.

News

External news is given in the form of green index cards that are delivered into Birdencaster by the use of trains. The green cards arrive in Zone 5. Once they are delivered from the Train Stations to the Captain of the Messengers’ offices and then delivered to the libraries themselves where they are hung on pin boards.

Purpose

The purpose of the libraries is to provide a place to research topics and to lend out the books from the library. This establishment is a general library meaning it has books on a whole range of topics. The library is a place to meet for courses or support groups.

What Hours Are They Open

The opening hours of the libraries are 9:30 to 17:30, Monday to Saturday[2].

Courses

The libraries offer courses to those who are between the ages of 16 - 99. These courses range from English and Mathematics courses all the way up to courses that could be considered a need to know to start a hobby, which could then lead to a Craft Job.

Boards

News Board
There are three large pinboards. These are separated into sections, these sections are sorted alphabetically by region of the United Kingdom of which there are 12 regions. Birdencaster is in the region known as the South West.   When the news which is printed on green index cards is no longer relevant for the news is now old the index card is sent to the University or Archives instead of being recycled.
Job Board
For Core Jobs, job postings can be put on the board and can be found by citizens of Birdencaster who are interested in finding this type of employment.   These like the news are put on to green index cards to limit confusion the boards themselves are labelled.

Support Clubs and Cources

The library service also provides support groups for issues that citizens may have which include:

Study groups are there to give some students away of study in a group and test each other on what they have learned or as a way to finish homework for schooling.

Board Games

Citizens of Birdencaster have been known to go to libraries and play board games together. It is another way of being able to play board games, they don’t have or are unable to purchase.

Services

Does It Only Do Books?

As part of The Great Rewind the only things the library lends to its members’ is books.

Are Donations Welcome?

Most of the time they are which are normally newly published books, which are either donated by members or bought by the library itself. In the later part of the The Old World the Salavaging industry that dealt with airports routinely went through the shopping areas of the airports. One of the products they would find in the airport shops in acceptable condition were books.   Books are more likely to be donated to libraries or purchased by the libraries themselves if the books are new there are very few books which are kept by everyone, one of which is Chromatic Smithing: The Whole Spectrum Of Metalsmithing. Most of the time books are borrowed from libraries not bought. As not everyone needs to clutter up their houses or apartments on topics they only need to know a small or limited about a certain topic.
