Salvaging: Airport Buildings

Technology Within Airports

The planes are not the only part of the airport. There are all the areas of the airport such as the terminal buildings, air traffic control as well as baggage handling and security areas.

Terminal buildings

For all retail areas, the workers carefully go through each shop and dismantle all of the shelving. Since these types of shelves can not be easily produced because of The Great Rewind. The shelves are sold as-is and not melted down into stainless steel ingots.   For places that have cash registers, these are broken into for the former currency. The silver coins in former British coins is nickel, so the coins of this type will be used to make newer currency in the future. The gold coins or nordic gold [9] is melted down to make plates to be used in the Electrochemical Separation Process for the purposes of separating the metals that make up the alloy. These metals are Copper, Zinc, Aluminium and Tin. The table below describes how much 1kg (35.27 oz) [9].

Metal % Total Weight of Metal in Alloy
Copper 89 890 Grams (31.39 Ounces)
Zinc 5 50 Grams (1.76 Ounces)
Aluminium 5 50 Grams (1.76 Ounces)
Tin 1 10 Grams (0.35 Ounces)
As you can see from the table above it takes a lot of nordic gold to make a 1kg (35.27 oz) ingot of the other metals that aren’t copper. Other parts of the shops are salvaged such as the items sold in the stores.   Items that are taken from stores are snacks, drinks, books and books and magazines.

Snacks and Drinks

Snacks and drinks are salvaged as drinks can be contained in aluminium cans. Drinks that are in plastic or are box drinks are left or burned as the plastic is not able to be remelted and used, unlike PLA. Vending machines are broken into for their items and the vending machines salvaged for their metals. The canned drinks that may be available are emptied and crushed the crushed cans are then melted. The fluid that remains is refined to its constituent chemicals and used in other applications.    Snacks are salvaged as they can contain useful items such as accessories that make consuming the product easily. These items can be useful as they contain materials that can be remelted and used or can be used in places that we would not expect. The Snacks themselves are burned.

Books and Magazines

Books and Magazines are important, they can show a snapshot of the past or regive lost information.
Travel Guides
While they can’t travel to the destinations mentioned, they can get a feel for how the world looked and felt. It can also be a historic guide to the past as they can see what tourists of their day would want to do or what is advertised or marketed towards them.
Cookbooks
This would mostly be a historic guide to the past’s cuisine, as some ingredients would be hard to come by such as most spices and exotic ingredients such as fruits and vegetables. The book its self may also give recipes that have been lost to time that can still be used. For this reason, cooking books are prized possessions.
Business Books
These would just be treated as a historic book on the past.
Autobiographies
Most of the autobiographies found are treated like pseudo historic tales. As the author can write their lives making themselves more positive at the expense of historical accuracy. The books are read but are taken with a pinch of salt. Some of these autobiographies give light to the past and the attitudes people had.
Fiction
The stories of the past may give a highlight to the past and its attitudes towards their lives at the time. The current morale of the period can leak into fiction and other literature. Giving a window into what the World of the past was like.
Magazines
These magazines are just taken as a history of the past and what was talked about in them. They also give light to what was being marketed towards readers.

Airport Parking

Other vehicles such as cars that might have been left in the parking areas or vehicles that helped with the process of a functioning airport go through the same process. This process is to put the vehicle in neutral and with the hand break off. The vehicle is wheeled through each station like henry ford’s production line but in reverse. What happens with the parts that are taken off. The metal is melted down and the rubber is used in other applications such as bicycle tires and the glass is used in other applications.

Air Traffic Control and Security Areas

In air traffic control and in the Security Areas, what is stripped is all the technology that they used to use. This is of course is carefully opened up and the electronics are stripped of their copper, silver and gold.

Baggage Handling

Like with the shelving from stores in the terminal building the conveyor belts are kept and sold as they can be used in industrial applications or in factories the baggage boxes used on the conveyors when loading planes are not kept but the mechanical parts are.
