Vampire

Bleh Bleh

"Everyone wants to live forever, Vampire is the perfect choice for the vain and lazy."
Vampires are an undead subspecies of demon that roam both Underworld and the surface. They a blood drinkers who can spread vampirism to mortals. There are two types of vampire. Nosferatu and Fledglings, both of which will be covered in this article.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Vampires are generally humanoid, but their anatomy differs between variants.   Nosferatu are the original, demonic species, with grotesque appearances that make it difficult to blend in on the surface world. They have a frail looking body with chalk white skin that wrinkles and sinks into their bones. Their eyes are dark and sunken with black sclera and glowing pupils. They lack body hair and have large pointed eyes, and a mouth full of specialize fangs for consuming meat. Many Nosferatu sport unkempt, gnarly finger and toe nails, as they grow fast.   Fledgling vampires are mortals who have been bitten and turned by a Nosferatu. As such they retain much of their human appearance, but with a few changes. Fledglings lose color in their skin, developing a dead looking pallor. Their irises will glow a bright color that can range from blood red, to golden yellow to an icy blue. Vampires will also develop a set of fangs, which can also vary from 1-4 pairs around the canines. However outside of these changes, fledglings still look human enough to hide in modern society.

Abilities

Strengths/Powers

The biggest draw to vampires is the prospect of giving the average person immortality and power. Vampires are self healing and never physically age. They are incredibly strong and fast, and some can even channel a special form of vampire magic, that allows them such abilities as flight, mind control and shapeshifting. Vampires can shapeshift into things such as bats, snakes and even wolves, all while retaining the capability of speech.   They have the ability to smell blood at a distance and tell the status of a person just from the smell and the taste of their blood, such as their physical sex, race, blood type, iron level, or if they have any blood born illnesses. These all effect the taste of the blood, and vampires have different preferences in the taste of their blood. Other undead tend to have a fowl rotten taste to their blood, and many vampires find the taste of Lycanthropy infected blood to be unpleasant as well.

Weaknesses

All this power comes with several rather harsh drawbacks. For starters, vampires are incredibly weak to sunlight, it burning them with in seconds of exposure. Vampires can only travel at night or with protection or else risk burning alive. Their eyes are also weaker in the light.   Vampires must maintain their bodies by drinking blood or even eating the corpses of living beings. If they fail to do this, they will grow weaker and start to lose their sanity. Their bodies will also quickly appear extremely emaciated and a starving vampire will be unable to use many of it's powers. Vampires deprived of blood for extended periods of time will enter a ravenous state, where they attack indiscriminately, desperate for blood. However, a vampire can put themselves in a comatose 'dead' state to avoid this for long stretches of time.   Many vampires older vampires are unable to eat solid food, as a diet of blood causes their stomach to shrivel up and be unable to process solid food as well as it used to. If they attempt to eat solid food it's likely they will get sick and throw it back up quickly. Vampires also can't stand the smell of certain root vegetables like onions or garlic, and will also get sick if they consume them.   Like most demons, they are weak to holy objects and light magic. Blessed objects or religious symbols reduce the strength of their powers. However unlike most demons, exorcisms are ineffective, and instead they must be destroyed by stabbing them in the heart or decapitating them.

Genetics and Reproduction

Normally it's very difficult for vampires to reproduce. Nosferatu are completely infertile, but fledglings can reproduce if it's done early on in their vampirism. Mortal pregnancies will miscarriage, so only two vampires can produce a child, however this is very taboo in vampire communities. This is because this produced what's known as a 'feral vampire' which can be quite dangerous.

Turning into a Vampire

Unlike most demons, vampires are gifted not only with the ability to live on the surface, but the ability to easily turn others into their own kind. This is thanks to a special venom vampire produce and can inject through their fangs. The poison is designed to initially shut down vital organ functionality, but this is not permanent. However there is a high risk of the process killing someone who isn't strong enough to turn.   The poison will render the victim comatose, as their body changes into it's new state. While the victim will appear lifeless and motionless, they are actually somewhat conscious, and many claim the experience of turning to be painful and terrifying.   Only Nosferatu can turn humans, which keeps the population controlled. Nosferatu can also turn others into Nosferatu, but it requires giving up a portion of their soul to do so. The shift into one takes significantly more time and is more taxing to the body, many changes happening long after the comatose state, forcing the new vampire to watch their body slowly deteriorate into a monstrous form. The chance of survival is even less that that of fledglings.

Feral Vampires

Feral vampires are the result of two fledglings reproducing. The child will inherit vampirism, but will start as a baby and grow into adulthood like a human would, stopping at peak physical maturity at about 25 years old. Ferals will slowly develop powers as they age, and they tend to be stronger that normal fledglings. Ferals require more blood than normal, and get hungry faster.   Ferals can be dangerous, as there is a chance they could not develop empathy or emotional control, making them ravenous monsters that attack everything on sight. This has made them quire feared among even other vampires. It's taboo and even banned in some areas to give birth to ferals, and the ones that exist are often ostracized.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Vampires typically live together in covens, usually led my a Nosferatu. Covens are secretive and tight knit in order to allow the members to safely what they need to do in order to not get caught.   Underneath the Nosferatu is the Master Vampire, sometimes known as The Director. This person is usually a powerful and experienced fledgling that the Nosferatu trusts to handle the most important jobs in the coven, such as handling important meetings, delivering messages from the Nosferatu, and enforcing coven rules. The Director usually has an assistant who will take their place if something were to happen to them.   Many covens employ what's known as 'blood slaves'. Humans who offer up their bodies to the vampires as a convenient source of blood. This is often in exchange for money, romance, or even the chance to be turned themselves. Blood Slaves must also follow the rules of the coven, or risk being drained and killed.

The corrupted souls of the dead, who live on in the Underworld.

History

Nosferatu came into existence with normal ghouls realized they could in theory, exist on the surface world if they could 'repossess' their old bodies, and maintain them by consuming the life force of humans. After many attempts they found success with drinking the blood of living mortals. They would later develop a means of granting this ability to already living mortals.   The first nosferatu believed they had discovered the secret to true, perfect immortality, and saw themselves as gods, however they're immoral methods of maintaining their physical forms, as well as their weakness to the sunlight, made it so they had to build their societies in secret. Nosferatu remain disconnected and disinterested in the affairs of demonic politics, as they were busy with their own goals on the surface.   Vampires over time were able to form tight knit, secret societies on the surface for centuries. Though stories about vampires would surface. Tales about villages being raided and slaughtered by blood sucking monsters. In the past, Vampires were a very real threat to humanity, so they would start to fight back. Humans discovered vampire weaknesses and began using them to attack or banish them. Vampire hunting groups would form to seek out and destroy vampires before they had the chance to attack.   This forced vampires to double down and retreat into hiding even more to protect themselves. Eventually people forgot about vampires, and they were eventually brushed off as a hoax in the modern era.

Beauty Ideals

Many covens value their public appearance and reputation. Fledglings are often required to look nice and behave civilized. Vampires are very prim and proper, and tend to where expensive clothing. People who dress like a slob or act like a ruffian, or simply fail to conform to high expectations, are often reprimanded for embarrassing the coven.

Taboos

The absolute worst thing a vampire could do is reveal any information about their existence to mortals. The most important thing to a coven is remaining a secret, and they will go to great lengths to keep things that way, such as spying, bribery, and most often murder. Even threatening to reveal any information is grounds to be killed. A human who knows more than they should about vampires is often targeted and killed simply for knowing.

Interspecies Relations

Vampires tend to be universally disliked by many different groups. Often considered gluttonous parasites by some, cruel monsters by others. Vampires tend to be rather disrespectful and condescending to other species, believing themselves to be the ultimate life-form. Despite descending from demons, other demons don't consider them true demons.
