BUTCHER'S ROWE

Butcher's Rowe = main street with meat on display.

HECK = "Shambles" is an obsolete term for an open-air slaughterhouse and meat market. Streets of that name were so called from having been the sites on which butchers killed and dressed animals for consumption. The Great Flesh Shambles, means Fleshameals - literally 'flesh-shelves' - the word for the shelves that butchers used to display their meat.

Among the structures of the Shambles is a shrine to Saint Margaret Clitherow, who was married to a butcher who owned and lived in a shop in the street. Her home is thought to have been No. 10 Shambles, on the opposite side of the street to the shrine, which has a priest hole fireplace.
