Peristeri
The town of Peristeri came into existence originally from a multitude of successful salvaging operations of relics of the Nameless Empire from the Nasvaltkos Crater. Eventually salvage became rarer, but just when it seemed that the town was on the brink of failure, adventurers with the Alsonan Rangers found multiple veins of ores, including both iron and rare minerals, in the outer parts of the crater. The mines have since become the focus of the local economy, though the Rangers frequently are hired by scholars from the University of Pegrama to recover or secure ruins and artifacts from the crater. Since the end of the Wingo War, the Crysos Mining Company has seized control over the majority of mining operations, sidelining the old landowning aristocracy and de facto seizing power.
Demographics
The people of Peristeri mostly consist of Alsonan humans, but have grown to include a fairly substantial number of dwarves and half-elves. The half-elves have resided in the region for longer, and have been best known as guides to the west and the crater. The dwarves on the other hand, are recent migrants, and for many this is simply a stopping point in the employ of the Crysos Mining Company before they move on to greener pastures in Valtkos Wingo.
Government
As is typical throughout the Kingdom of Alsona, the mayor of Peristeri is selected by a vote among all landowning individuals present in the town and surrounding territory. Traditionally, this has been among the landowning aristocracy, but in the wake of the Wingo War, the Crysos Mining Company has secured a controlling number of votes, by increasing the number landowners. They have therefore appointed their own delegate to manage Peristeri in their favor and reduce the power of the old guard. The mayor has the authority to appoint delegates and bureaucrats to staff positions in the community, and they are typically selected for their favorable opinions to the mining operations. They are granted full power over the administration of law and order.
Defences
The wall of Peristeri has been well maintained over the years, and has proven its effectiveness in the Wingo War, being built of solid stone. The gates themselves are said to be made of an extinct metal crafted by the Nameless Empire, and cannot be breached by even the most powerful of weapons or magic. The Royal Alsonan Army is responsible for the defense of Peristeri, providing a single regiment to act as a permanent garrison for the town and surrounding region. This has recently been supplemented by a growing number of mercenaries supplied by the Crysos Mining Company, mostly veteran enforcers who have seen combat across Alsona both during and before the Wingo War. The mercenaries provide most of the law and order for the town and its mining operations in the crater. Should the town ever again come under a direct siege or assault, a militia of 600 people could be rallied to the defense.
Industry & Trade
Mining and salvage remain the most important element of Peristeri's community. Although a thriving tourist trade does exist for the wealthy from Pegrama and Parthenonas, these mostly come to witness the wonders and objects retrieved from the Crater. The mines themselves have helped the town thrive after the Wingo War, stepping into a hole created by the loss of the Wingo Mine and the western province. The sheer amount of smiths and foundries that have been installed for the processing of minerals coat the town in a thick layer of smog, but provide indisputable wealth for those employed there.
Infrastructure
The development of Peristeri has always relied upon the salvage and materials claimed from the Nasvaltkos Crater. Rare metals, weapons, and other items have been often found and integrated into the defense and infrastructure of the community. One unique feature that was salvaged is the trolley system, in which an ancient mechanism is used to power a half dozen trolleys that pace themselves along the central paved roads. They have always been free to all citizens of the town and even travelers, paid for by taxation of the goods found in the Crater. Without requiring horse or other beast of burden, they are considered to be one of the wonders of Alsona.
Outside of the trolley system, Peristeri is a backwater in terms of roadwork and development. Most of the roads remain unpaved off of the main thoroughfares, and sewage and garbage traditionally is hauled out and dumped into the crater. Although this keeps the town clean, some criticisms have emerged, claiming that the growing heaps of waste has threatened the hygiene of the town and the well-being of the miners headed into the crater.
Assets
Peristeri has always catered towards adventurers and those who seek wealth and glory in the Nasvaltkos Crater. There are five inns, each named for a hero of the Alsonan Rangers. Although salvage has somewhat dried up of the Nameless Empire in the Crater, that has not stopped the sale of goods retrieved from the ruins and beyond. A thriving market exists selling magical goods of both real and dubious natures, as stalls and shops regularly fluctuate to take advantage of travelers and those seeking the wonders of the old world. Many of these trinkets end up in high demand, and regularly cursed goods from the crater will turn up and cause trouble for adventurers to solve.
