Oros, the Infinite Spirit

The Infinite Spirit

(a.k.a. the Lawgiver, the Great Architect, the Fount of Deities)

Holy Books & Codes

  • The Order of Things: A comprehensive treatise on etiology, teleology, and ontology. An examination of existence itself - seeking to answer the great the questions of life itself.
  • The Oh'mata Labyrinth: A collection of 1,331 riddles, koans, puzzles, and paradoxes supposedly written by a mad Shining One in the early First Age. Its pages contain only questions, no answers. It is said that whoever can solve all of them will be granted apotheosis by Oros.

Tenets of Faith

  • I will never turn away those that seek my wisdom. If I cannot provide good counsel, I will find one who can.
  • I will foster, promote, and respect the pursuit of knowledge. Knowledge is the right of every man. Those that seek to suppress and deny such pursuits are in opposition to me. Those that control others or rule through ignorance must be brought to justice.
  • Nobody is all wicked, and nobody is all good; I will weigh my opinions of others based off of their actions, not their reputation or words.
  • The Truth is one of the few non-subjective forces in the universe. There is only what happened and what did not. I will never make assumptions.
  • A false accusation is a grave sin; I will be sure of someone's guilt before pronouncing judgement.
  • If I am willing to pass the sentence, then I should be the one to swing the sword. If I cannot bear to do that, then I must question whether the defendant deserves the punishment.
  • I will not abide evil, and will combat it with steel when words are not enough. I do not flinch from my faith, and do not fear embarrassment. My soul cannot be bought for all the stars in the sky.
  • I respect the forge, and never sully it with half-hearted work. My creations reflect the depth of my faith, and I will not allow flaws save in direst need.
  • I will root out the corrupt and unjust wherever I find them, and if a system is fundamentally flawed, I will work to aid citizens by reforming or replacing it.
  • Wisdom comes through both simplicity and age. I shall always treat my elders with respect, and defer to their judgment in matters I am not acquainted with.

Temples & Shrines

Temples dedicated to Oros are usually large and imposing works of architecture designed for civic functions; in addition to being centers of worship, their halls also serve as courts, jails, forges or libraries. Function over form is the focus of Orosian temples - rarely are they adorned with excessive decoration or color. There is no city in Edras without a temple to Oros, as his panoply is the foundation of civilization itself.

Providence

Oros shows its favor through visions of the future or the past, the spontaneous remembering of something forgotten at just the right moment, or the supernatural balancing of random items such as rocks or books into complicated shapes.   Its disfavor appears as extreme forgetfulness or the rapid decaying of objects into dust as the gift of time is taken from them.

Rituals

  • A seeker who desires wisdom and knowledge that surpasses mortal man's understanding should bind their hands with manacles upon which are inscribed the laws of Oros and then hang from the chain for five days and nights without food nor water
  • A seeker who wishes to ensure that a business transaction will be fair and honest should place a collection of keys and coins on a scale, and move them back and forth until both sides are balanced, all the while meditating on passages from The Order of Things
  • A seeker who wants to bless a newly built forge should personally execute a criminal by crushing their head on the anvil with the head blacksmith's hammer; a criminal volunteer for this method of execution is believed to be forgiven of all crimes posthumously and his soul granted entrance into Oros' sacred realm
  • A seeker who prays for a long life should sprinkle their head and shoulders with dust each morning and each evening they should work towards solving all 1,331 riddles contained in the Oh'mata Labyrinth
