Scrivener, Scion of Tomes

Scrivener is the Scion of Tomes. Scrivener was born a Bastardfolk; one so horrifically disfigured that it was abandoned at the gates of Sanctum in the peaceful times before the First Howling. Despised by all who looked upon it, Scrivener only found refuge within the walls of the Arkaion, the ancient library at the center of Sanctum that held all of the wisdom and knowledge of the Brisingelion.   Taken in by a lowly archivist who had pity on the creature, Scrivener was raised in secret and taught to assist in the upkeep of the library - stacking books, organizing sections, rebinding tomes and eventually even copying manuscripts. It showed a remarkable talent for memorization and comprehension, learning dozens of languages and amassing an encyclopedic knowledge of nearly all subjects over the many years within the library's stacks.    Despite its success in the Arkaion, however, it still longed for the world beyond the book-lined walls of the archive. It knew that it could never leave the safety of its academic cage as the monstrosity it had been cursed to be born as, but perhaps there was another way. It had long since discovered sections of the Arkaion where only the wisest and most ancient archivists were permitted to tend to books of mystical power and occult knowledge.    In one such manuscript, an obscure treatise on extraplanar manipulations of essence and form, Scrivener believed that it had found a solution to its limitations and a way to safely venture into the outside world. Hidden from the watchful eye of the Arkaion's keepers, Scrivener enacted a ritual of sorts that called upon all manner of non-Euclidean geometry and madness inducing arithmetic - all in the hopes that it could use the focused energies to unmake its very essence and shape it into a more acceptable form.   But the permutations were too vast for even Scrivener's studied mind to hold within its grasp and alas the ritual spiraled out of control. Unable to prevent the dissolution of its physical form, Scrivener struggled against the bounds of reality and barely managed to prevent its essence from collapsing completely by violently shunting it into the nearest object.    When Scrivener awoke, it was no longer the malformed beast of its birth; it was the Arkaion (or at least the tomes contained within its walls). With a rustling of papers like fallen leaves in a whirlwind, Scrivener took form from the unbound pages of the very books it had spent its life tending. A victim of its own hubris, Scrivener was now truly cursed to never again set foot outside the walls of the Arkaion.   Submitting to its fate, Scrivener took charge of the Arkaion and has served as its High Archivist ever since. Some time after the First Howling, when Sanctum had settled upon the still waters of Sasona, Oros took pity upon Scrivener and with its last act before falling into a deific slumber granted it divinity. Scrivener ascended as the Scion of Tomes, forever bound to both Oros and the Arkaion itself, though finally free to see the world that it so dearly coveted.
