Zerubabel, Scion of Destiny

Zerubabel is the Scion of Destiny. He died in 0 AS, one of the many Shining Ones who volunteered to be sacrificed to begin the ritual which caused the Shattering. At the center of the buckling of time and space, rather than simply dying like the other Shining Ones whose essences were annihilated by the ritual, Zerubabel ceased to exist. Pulled outside of the natural flow of time and no longer slave to the whims of causality, the otherwise unimportant and unremembered Shining One became something new and unique. In that moment he may have become the first Scion, though none would know it for some time. He may also end up being the last Scion, though it is likely that history itself will have passed away long before such a thing is decided.    Hundreds of years later, Zerubabel appeared again. During the tri-centennial celebration of the end of the War of Souls, he stepped out of a tavern he hadn't been in just moments prior. He approached Oros, who recognized him instantly, and accepted an hourglass of gold and platinum from the deity. Ever filling from the top with beads both light and dark, flowing and disappearing as they drop to the bottom, the hourglass itself seemed to shudder within Zerubabel’s grasp. Many scholars say that the motes of light within Zerubabel’s hourglass are souls, as lifetimes are the only real way to measure time.    In the millenia since, the Scion of Destiny has made many appearances. Though the details of his appearance seem to change without reason, he always has the hourglass held tightly within his grasp. He appears as an unassuming Shining One, though he may be young, old, well dressed, or wearing tattered clothes. Scholars have desperately attempted to put together a timeline of his appearances in an effort to sort them into a sort of chronological accounting, but as of yet have been utterly unsuccessful. When he appears, it is generally to sort out damage that time-based magic has caused, though sometimes it is to do insanely mundane things, such as turn one half-crank of the bucket in a town well, or to remove one stone from the corner of a building, or to paint a strange symbol in an alley. Whatever his inscrutable reasons, he always appears and disappears through doorways.
