Sielach, Duchess of Trumpets

The Second Sister of Oros

(a.k.a. the Dawnfire, the Burning Maiden)

Holy Books & Codes

  • The Ignarion: The primary holy book of the Church of Sielach. It is a small breviary containing prayers, hymns, and so on for everyday use at the canonical hour of daybreak or First Light.
  • The Flamekeeper's Chronicle: A work of myth (or perhaps not) that tells the story of the first flamekeeper, who carried the light of Sielach to the first churches, and their many adventures.
  • The Collected Celebrations of Edras: An omnibus work thoroughly detailing all of the holy days and festivals of the people of Edras - past and present.
  • The Liber Embrarium (or the Book of Dying Embers): It was written by a devout follower of Elishat and contains a multitude of musings on death, rebirth, and their connections to the metaphysical aspects of fire. Legend says that Elishat allowed the author to pen the tome with a quill made from one of her ever-burning pinions.

Tenets of Faith

  • The best battle is a battle I win. If I die, I can no longer fight. I will fight fairly when the fight is fair, and I will strike quickly and without mercy when it is not.
  • I will protect my allies with my life. They are my light and my strength, as I am their light and their strength. We rise together. I am the first into battle and the last to leave.
  • I will show the less fortunate the light of the Dawnfire. I will live my life as her mortal blade, shining with the flames of hope and determination.
  • Whether a blade or a flute, my weapon will be as steady as the sun and my training will be as consistent; I shall respect what I have mastered and seek to impart this training to others.
  • I will never destroy or interrupt a work of art, nor allow one to come to harm or be interrupted, unless greater art arises from its loss. I will only sacrifice art if doing so allows me to save a life, for untold beauty can arise from an awakened soul.
  • I will seek out and destroy the spawn of the Primordials. If I cannot defeat them, I will give my life trying. If my life would be wasted in the attempt, I will find allies. If any fall because of my inaction, their deaths lie upon my soul, and I will atone for each.
  • Fire is the light of Sielach. I will keep her holy flames burning whenever and wherever I can, that they may cut through the darkness and that the people may know that there is hope for victory.
  • Celebrations are sacred rites that bind our communities together; they remind us what we fight for and what we love. I will offer whatever assistance I can to those overseeing them. I will not suffer a good party to be ended by violence or treachery.

Holidays

  • The Grand Jubilee: A celebration of celebrations that lasts two days in mid-Blossomtide. Ostensibly, the Grand Jubilee is a modern derivation of the celebration the Brisingelion held when the War of Souls ended. Current day kingdoms co-opt this day to celebrate their own victories, coronations, and other national accomplishments.
  • The Blessing of First Light: This is the most sacred holy day celebrated by the Church of Sielach. The holy pyres in Sielach's temples are extinguished for the last three days of Lastlight and the flamekeepers abandon the temples in preparation for this ceremony. Coinciding with daybreak on the first of Frostbloom, they return to the temples to relight the holy pyres for the new year.
  • The Festival of Colours: During the day locals hang baubles of glass and bronze throughout town in order to spread light and scatter rainbows in the streets. As townsfolk prepare for the evening festivities, artisans and musicians ply their trades, hoping for a coin or two while they sell their crafts and play tunes for the people while they browse. Throughout the day, the locals exchange small gifts—typically handmade—as tokens of appreciation or as peace offerings to those they feel they wronged during the year. To reflect artistic depictions of Sielach, women dye colored streaks in their hair. Young girls commonly have half a dozen different colored locks, while older married women usually only have one or two. Men wear colorful patchwork coats they call geherams that they keep their whole lives, adding new patches or scraps of scavenged cloth every year.

Temples & Shrines

The main temples of the Duchess of Trumpets are gorgeous buildings, each a work of art itself, done in the grand architectural styles of the day. Architects and builders frequently compete for the honor of repairing or adding a new wing to one of Sielach’s holy sites. All tend to be extremely colorful, though black and gold feature prominently. Many have brass or gold mirrors throughout their halls that serve to refocus the light of holy pyres towards a main altar. Usually filled with the sounds of music, celebration, or mock battles being fought, Sielach’s temples are rarely, if ever, quiet.

Providence

Sielach makes her favor known by reshaping ordinary objects into sword-like shapes, the appearance of gold light around a person or object, or the distant sounds of a celebratory crowd. Her anger is displayed through the rusting of otherwise well cared for weapons or armor, spontaneous fires, or piercing, discordant music with no visible source.

Rituals

  • A seeker praying for deliverance from the cold of winter can perform a series of sacred fire dances at dawn and sunset for eight days
  • A seeker asking for Sielach's blessing in battle might bathe a weapon emblazoned with the goddess' holy symbol in the first rays of morning light while reciting prayers from the Ignarion
  • A seeker hoping to find a muse or divine inspiration must give a piece of artwork to a stranger as a gift
  • A seeker who desires a blessing for a party they plan to host should place bells of brass and bronze at the corners of the establishment where the party will be held, then make sure to ring each of them nine times on the morning of the festivities
