Darguun

The region that is now Darguun was previously part of Cyre during the war. The hobgoblin clans that are collectively known as the Ghaal'dar were based in the Seawall Mountains, but many of them emerged from their mountain fortresses to serve as mercenaries during the war.   Cyre in particular made heavy use of goblinoid mercenaries. In the later years of the war, a brilliant hobgoblin general named Haruuc of the Rhukaan Taash recognised that the goblinoids had become the dominant military force in the region. Haruuc gathered together the Ghaal'dar clans and united them under his banner, and seized the territory that he and his soldiers had been hired to protect from Breland and Thrane. With the region under his control, Haruuc declared himself Lhesh Haruuc Shaarat'kor, and a nation was born.   Nobody was prepared for this betrayal, least of all Cyre, and Breland quickly negotiated an alliance with Haruuc to secure the border between them. Haruuc had laid claim to the region, stating that it was the ancestral home of his people and should belong to them. He named the region "Darguun", or the "Land of the People" in goblin. Cyre continued to fight to try and reclaim the region until the Day of Mourning, but most of the other nations that signed the Treaty of Thronehold chose to recognise Darguun as a sovereign nation.   Darguun is a young and fairly volatile nation. There is talk throughout the Five Nations about whether this new country will last, after all, it was built from violence and betrayal, and many wonder how strong the alliances Haruuc forged to make it happen really are. For their part, Darguun have abided by the terms of the Treaty of Thronehold, which is more than can be said of Valenar. Lhesh Haruuc seems to be genuinely invested in building a sustainable home for his people, and has won over the delegates and diplomats sent to work with him. There is concern, however, that the nation is effectively held together by the charismatic Haruuc, and he is getting old. The future is uncertain for the land of the people.   There are three main power groups in Darguun: the Ghaal'dar clans, the Marguul and the Heirs of Dhakaan. Each of the Ghaal'dar clans have representatives in Rhukaan Draal that pursue their own interests. The Marguul have technically sworn allegiance to the Lhesh, but in practice they don't attend councils and keep to themselves. Of the Kech clans, only the Kech Volaar have sent representatives to Rhukaan Draal, and they have not revealed who they really are, instead masquerading as just another Ghaal'dar clan. Haruuc holds court regularly and hears the representatives of each of the clans concerns and desires, and plans the path forward for the nation accordingly.   Most of the population of Darguun is concentrated in the Seawall Mountains and around the Ghaal river. In the northern regions of Darguun, the goblinoids have moved into the human settlements that were once part of Cyre. South of the river, however, was less settled by the Cyrans and is far more wild. The goblinoids have begun building cities in this region, including the capital of Rhukaan Draal, using whatever materials they can acquire.   Darguun has no state religion, though many of it's citizens worship their own variation of the Sovereign Host, specifically worshipping Balinor, Dol Arrah, Dol Dorn, The Mockery and The Shadow together. House Deneith has a large presence in Darguun, and has brought with it worship of the Sovereign Host. In particular, Lhesh Haruuc has taken up the worship of Dol Dorn, something which his political opponents within the Ghaal'dar clans use against him.
