vlar - there is no name more fabled, feared or revered in all of Daënfel. Once a mortal man, Avlar assumed control of his home city of Avalon at a young age, over 300 years ago. He quickly convinced, ensorcelled or slew the opposing nobility who barred his progress, and set out to conquer the continent of Daënfel. After destroying or subduing nearly all of the continent's inhabitants - most notably, The Kingdom of Eá-galwen - Avlar slew the goddess Death and ascended to godhood, assuming her role as usher to the fallen. At the time of his ascension the capital of his empire, Avalon, was completely destroyed. Accounts differ as to why this happened - some believe he sacrificed the city to attain godhood, others believe the gods, led by The Green Knight, destroyed his home as retribution for slaying one of their own. None know the truth of the matter, however to this day Avalon is lost to civilization, and the area around the once-great kingdom is known as Avlar's Folly. Since his ascension and to this day, Avlar is enraptured in an eternal battle with The Green Knight - the father of Lady Death - and those gods who still oppose his ascension. Sentiment towards Avlar varies across the many cultural regions of Daënfel. The cities that fell under his rule early during his campaign fully support the God-King and his ascension, while those who resisted and were broken by his conquests view him as a dark stain on the continent's history; a tyrant who claimed power that was not his to take. Theological debate around this topic takes place very often across the continent, with countless articles, papers and treatises being written about this conflict. In particular, it is one of the key differences that set apart the powerful organizations of the Empire. Whether a supporter of his ascension or not, none doubt the power, ambition and cunning of the God-King. Citizens of the Empire call upon Avlar's power before battle, when making a tactical move against a hated foe or to call upon some of the lesser practiced arcane disciplines. His primary religious symbol is a longsword, dipped in blood. There are many other representations of Avlar throughout history, including; a masked, armoured figure, a sceptre surrounded by crackling red energies, or the heraldry of the kings of Avalon - the speckled Gryphon.
