Arcane Spellcasting in the Dawning Empire

Daënfel and the Dawning Empire have a tense relationship with arcane magic, as there is a bloody history of its use. In the time of Avalon over three centuries ago, The God-King, Avlar conquered the continent due not in small part to his mastery of the arcane arts, particularly spells that influenced the mind. Avlar's legacy can still be felt within the Dawning Empire.   There are five major schools of magic that are respected above the others in the Dawning Empire:
  • Creation - Conjuration
  • Change - Transmutation
  • Power - Evocation
  • Protection - Abjuration
  • Foresight - Divination
The wizarding schools of the Empire, in particular The Royal Wizarding Academy, focus their tutelage in these forms of magic, and as such they are more commonly found across the continent.   Casters of the three lesser schools of magic - Illusion (Deceive), Enchantment (Charm), and Necromany (Animate) - are few and far between. Finding an arcane magician who specializes in these fields for the purposes of tutelage is particularly difficult within the Empire; ambitious wizards and sorceresses must look beyond the bounds of civilization.   Divine casters of these schools are usually given leeway in this regard, as it is seen to be the will of the Gods to allow the casting of these spells. For example, "a cleric is not evil for bringing someone back to life", some might say, while a wizard "is following in Avlar's blood-covered footsteps" by speaking with the dead.   The severity to which this is felt is incredibly regional, and is tied directly to a locale's general sentiment towards Avlar's reign and ascension. In an agenda pushed by the divine leaders of the Empire from their seat in Trinity - it is common to see Avlar depicted in such a light as to forego his misuse of magic in his subjugation of the continent. Conversely, other institutions of magic, such as the Conclave of the Fifth revere magic in all of its forms, despite their criticism of Avlar's methodology. Those who directly opposed Avlar, such as the Weavers & Spinners Union of Helias, have no tolerance for such magic, and act with direct hostility for those suspected of controlling another's mind.
