Humans

Humans are one of the sapient species inhabiting Borgalor, and until relatively recently were one of the most populous one up until the Fell Wars. They are now among the rarest, though their numbers have slowly increased over the decades since. Once the rulers of Maralon Steppe and nearby regions in southwestern Jælondis, most humans are now found in southern part of that continent or in the Southlands, as much of their traditional territory lies in ruins and is infested with the undead.

Appearance and abilities

Borgalorean humans are superficially similar the ones in our world, with the added ability to sense and manipulate magic, and more diverse skin-, hair- and eye colours for those of mixed ancestry.
They share a common lineage with Dwarves and more distantly with Elves, and superficially resemble the former to the point of often being lumped with them by the other peoples of Borgalor. However, humans are less suited to the kind of environments which dwarves excel in due to suffering from altitude sickness and having frailer bodies in general.
Like their relatives, humans are able to continuously use magic for quite a while, though not as long as elves, and an untrained human's spells are generally not as powerful as those of an untrained dwarf. However, they are more adept at using ranged spells than most borgaloreans.

History

For most of their early history, humans shared western and southeastern Jælondis with the elves and lowland dwarves, wandering across Maralon Steppe, the temperate savanna of Fúmsis and even parts of the arid Lamþó Hills on horseback in the constant search of prey and new land to graze their flocks throughout the year. Even as they began settling down in or near their neighbours settlements or founding their own near major rivers, most human cultures remain heavily influenced by their nomadic pastoralist roots in terms of clothing, cuisine, art and religion to this day.
While not nearly as accomplished sailors as many goblin or jútrilían elven cultures, certain humans did later on play a significant role in exploring the world outside Jælondis and shaping the relations with the people there, including the colonization of the southlandic coast. Coastal human cultures adopted many ideas and customs of the people they encountered and traded with abroad, and in turn introduced them to their neighbours closer to home.
Not all accepted these changes, however: as their influence grew among the Jútrilían Elves, for example, the more conservative Þjaric Elves further north shunned virtually all that had (or at least was perceived having) been introduced from elsewhere and closed their border to the outside world for centuries. As the coastal countries -in part due to orcish influence- evolved into republics, the rulers of the human kingdoms on the Maralon Steppe began finding ways to ensure their power would remain unchallenged, including dabbling into Necromancy which later lead to the Fell Wars.
Most remaining human countries and ethnic groups still claim the territories lost to the undead in the decades since the war and several organizations (both human and international) have attempted to eradicate the beings from the region, commonly known as Amþax. The sheer number of undead has made even keeping them within Amþax difficult at best though, so progress remains slow.
