Þjan Tundra

Ælic: Þjanlef /θjaːnlɛːf/
The Þjan Tundra covers much of the northernmost part of the continent of Jælondis, where long winters and cold climate prevent all but hardy low lying plants and liches to grow. Winters there are dark and often windy, though it doesn't snow nearly as much as in the taiga further south, while traveling over the tundra becomes difficult during summertime as the thawing soil produces mud, marshes and lakes.

Fauna & Flora

The Þjan Tundra is home to such creatures as reindeer, muskoxen, wolves, northern Gryphons, foxes and various species of birds and rodents. The reindeer are particularly numerous, forming enormous herds during their seasonal migrations across the tundra and parts of the taiga. Bears sometimes wander into the region during summer, though they generally prefer the woodlands south of it.
Local flora includes all sorts of grasses, shrubs, heather and flowering plants, including alchemical ingredients such as Frost Roses, pseudoflora which are so well adapted to this environment that they can't grow anywhere else. Lichen are also common in this region.

History

Due to the harsh environment, most of the tundra have for the most part been merely visited by lowland dwarven and -to lesser extent- goblin hunters and those looking for rare medicinal and alchemical ingredients when in season, with the exception of the western part, which has long been home to Þjaric Elves, nomadic hunters at first and, later on, sedentary societies that developed during the time when the inhabitants shunned all contact with the rest of Jælondis and made only use of the materials and wildlife at hand in Þjaris.
For example, the Æleans, people of Ælea, managed to domesticate muskoxen found on the tundra to produce Muskox Wool for making warm clothing in the absence of sheep wool.
