Frost roses1 are an example of a special category of lifeforms in Borgalor know to scholars there as pseudoflora2, which only grow in places with high arcane energy, perish if the source of magic is removed, while changes in the amount of sunlight or moisture it receives has relatively little effects on them. While superficially resembling plants, frost roses don't produce or grow from seeds, but instead form clusters around magic crystals in the soil, and don't lay dormant during winter like the surrounding flora on the Þjan Tundra. In fact, they grow faster at freezing temperatures.
Frost roses sometimes appear in large numbers in places without the crystals, given that the amount of arcane energies are high enough and the temperature is ideal, but these are usually smaller and brittler than those growing around crystals.

Basic Information

Anatomy

At first glance, frost roses resemble ice sculptures of vaguely fern-like plants, with larger ones sporting a kind of flower at the center, the appearance of which varies from one cluster to another, from rose-like (hence the name) to irregular spike formations to resembling a huge snowflake.
The leaves and stems are flexible much like ordinary plants, cold to the touch and secrete a clear sap when cut.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The Þjaric Elves and other peoples who live near the Þjan Tundra have long collected frost roses as alchemical ingredients, particularly the sap which helps stabilize more volatile ingredients in certain potions, and the leaves are used in poultices to treat blisters.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Certain species of magic-resistant microbes are found in the soil near frost roses, which consume any leaves or other parts that fall to the ground, or the whole pseudoplant in case the amount of arcane energy on the spot changes.

2Pseudofauna also exist in Borgalor, of which Dust Bunnies are the most well known species.
