Vivien

Vivien was born in a Golden Nighabi camp. The girl never learned who her parents were. Instead, the 78th Aseuli became her family, raising the child as their own.

The Grand Metal War

When the Grand Metal War began, Dayani Khelmtiphe Malkisaidek sent Golden Nighabis throughout the lands. The girl was too young to join the battles, but eagerly listened to soldiers’ tales and awaited her time to shine.

Several years after the war began, Vivien came of age and officially joined the Nighabis. The girl swore loyalty to the division and donned a golden mask. Unlike other members, Vivien had no past self to sacrifice, so she didn't receive a new name. The girl severed the link to her original star and connected to Spasalari Djovara. She quickly attuned to Djovara’s telekinesis and freely moved items at will.

The excitement of battle dwindled as the war carried on. Vivien never developed a taste for pillaging, preferring to stay in her tent and not indulge in the spoils of war.

The Duel of a Lifetime

The war carried on for ten years. During the Duel at the Istahir Wastes, Malkisaidek and Firozi Maharaja Dahaab took off their armour, threw the weapons with a loud thud and dueled each other. As the clash carried on, soldiers from both sides gathered around the two kings to witness the spectacle. Vivien watched as Dahaab's hits immobilised Malkisaidek, causing his limbs to dangle weightlessly. But the khelmtsiphe didn't stagger. With a firm stomp, he grew roots around himself, puppeteering his body and carried on the duel.

The Grand Metal War ended when Malkisaidek entangled Dahaab in roots and shattered his chest with the morning star.

Great Wide Somewhere

After the war ended, Malkisaidek deployed the 78th Aseuli in Firoz to guard its new ruler, Lavran Lavvaley. Patrolling the streets, questioning locals, raiding rebel families and carrying out executions became an everyday chore. As four years passed, Vivien yearned for life outside the familiar camp. An identity of her own and an adventure anywhere the tides took her.

During one unassuming raid, a rebel threw a bottled substance as a distraction. It exploded upon impact, breaking Vivien's mask and leaving a faint scar on her lip. As she returned to the camp and stared at the cracked mask, a thought crossed her mind. She knew Nighabis punished desertion with death. Still, she deemed the risk worth the new future. But, before fleeing, there was one man Vivien had to meet.

A Possible Link

Vivien noted how blue hair and eyes were a rarity in dunyars. During the Grand Metal War, she saw only two people possessing these features - Lavran and his bastard, Piino. Owing to Lavran's closeness to the Golden Nighabis, Vivien suspected he had an affair with a Nighabi soldier, resulting in her birth.

She asked a private audience with Lavran, and surprisingly, he agreed. Vivien took off her mask and asked if she was Lavran's daughter. The insulted ruler stared at her in disbelief. But Vivien stood firm, without a hint of anxiety. A faint smirk crossed Lavran's face as he scoffed,

“Another would-be daughter?”

A Kind-hearted So-called Pirate

Not wishing to test the fate again, Vivien bowed her head, left the palace and headed to the port. After changing clothes, she scanned the shore to find a passenger ship. Her eyes landed on a shabby ship, “Qalethia”, led by a one-armed nikophsi. The man swirled a blue flower between his teeth, introduced himself as Pendraken, and invited the client on board. He was headed to Niiberah, the largest port in Nikophsia. Vivien had heard about Nikophsia’s diverse cities, welcoming merchants from all over Ayonerra. A perfect place to start a new life.

The deserter took Pendraken's hand and hopped on board. Several days at sea, Vivien heard hushed whimpers coming from the cabins. She asked Pendraken about it and the captain replied,

“They are sick! No one would take them. Look, they deserve their chance to survive. But I don’t want you to catch it, right?”

Vivien knew the man was lying through his teeth, but she didn't care enough to pry. The unknown folk were none of her concern.

An Unwanted Passenger

A week later, Vivien noticed broken planks, torn sails and numerous bodies floating near a Southern Divider island’s border. Pendraken anchored the ship, tossed a bag on his back and approached the shipwreck. Vivien stayed onboard, wondering what random loot the smuggler would bring.

After some time, Pendraken came back, looking paler than ever. Seconds later, a tall, blond dunyar boarded the ship. He was wearing greyish-black armour, adorned with orange feathers and golden embroidery. Vivien froze as she recognised Dayani commander, Remus Kin'Ghaard. She had fought alongside him in the Metal War and witnessed the sheer power the Unlinked man possessed. If he found out she was a Nighabi deserter, Vivien was as good as dead. The woman forced a smile and introduced herself to the unwanted acquaintance.

Magic

Vivien severed her original link to the star, connected to Djovara and shared her telekinesis. She cut off the link after deserting the Golden Nighabi.

Unlike most dunyars, Vivien can freely bond to a new star after severing her link with a previous one. She waits some time to familiarise with new magic and searches for one most suitable to her. As she links again, some of her hair strands change colour according to the new star.

Notable Relationships

Golden Nighabi
Vivien was on good terms with the 78th Aseuli, but never got too close to any member. Most soldiers found kinship in sharing their histories with each other. But Vivien had no pre-Nighabi life to reminisce about.
Vivien admired Spasalari Djovara and wished to fight by her side more often.

Malkisaidek
While watching his duel with Dahaab, Vivien realised Malkisaidek didn't fight just because it was necessary. The khelmtsiphe indulged in every second of the clash, turning the duel into a spectacular performance.
Ever since, Vivien has been searching for a passion that resonates with her.

Pendraken
The one-armed liar piqued Vivien’s interest. She enjoys hearing different lies the smuggling captain brews. Vivien hasn't missed the looks Pendraken occasionally sneaks.
Vivien thinks Pendraken might become a gateway to the new life she's been searching for.

Remus
Vivien has heard stories of the Unlinked commander going toe to toe with mages. At first, she deemed the tales as pure exaggeration. But after fighting by Remus’s side, she came to admire the man’s skills and ferocity.
She's terrified of Remus figuring out her identity.

Lovely lady, I wonder if Lavran ever admitted to being her father after all and what connection she could have with her possible half-brother? Did she wear a new helmet after the destruction of it (wonderfully drawn helmet - I love the uniqueness and the golden reflection) or did she see the destruction as a sign?

Thank you!   Lavran thinks Vivien is his niece (his sister Prisela's daughter). But doesn't share the suspicion.   She saw the broken mask as a sign and went to Lavran soon after. She still had the same broken mask when meeting him. So never made a new mask.

What a fascinating character. I hope that she finds a good new life (despite the whole apathy to the possible slave trade happening).
