Everyn Federation (ehv-er-in)

The Everyn Federation is the newest nation in the world, formed in 1480 2A when the Dumein Dominion conquered almost all of eastern Ayndrinor. The resulting political arrangement was the Federation, of which the Dumeiner king is the absolute leader. The different constituent provinces of the Federation have slightly different arrangements and governing structures within their boundaries, but most enjoy some amount of autonomy.   Like most thing surrounding the war, this new nation was named after the famously peaceful and prosperous city of Everyn instead of the Dominion, to help deflect criticism and animosity. While perhaps a good thought on paper, this has absolutely not been the case in the world, and most people recognize that Everyn was the first victim and not in any way the perpetrator of the conquest and imperialism that defined the recent history.   It is still early days of the Federation, and the systems in place now may or may not last for the long run. Various parties and factions within the provinces are constantly lobbying for more autonomy, and the recency of the war means that many provinces have a strong rebel province that hopes for full independence once again.

Structure

At the very top of the Federation's hierarchy is the Emperor himself, currently Oswold IX of the Dumein Dominion. The various provinces - with the notable exception of the capital city of Everyn - have been allowed to retain their pre-war structures, though the leaders of the provinces are now supervised by overseers from the Federation to ensure they are not fomenting rebellion.   Most of the appointed leadership positions within the Federation - including the mayor or Everyn and the provincial overseers - are either friends or family of the Emperor, appointed through nepotism and because the emperor needs to keep trusted eyes on the provinces to make sure the hard-won peace is maintained.

History

The formation of the Everyn Federation came in 1480 2A, when the Dominion conquered the famous city of Everyn through a cunning series of political marriages and covert military action. With the jewel of the world secured, the Dumeiner king imposed himself as the leader of Everyn and began training his troops for a campaign to conquer the rest of eastern Ayndrinor.   With the signing of the Peace of Everyn in 1483, the provinces and conquered peoples agreed to be ruled by the emperor as part of the newly created Federation. Some of these provinces joined voluntarily, hoping for leniency in keeping their autonomy, while others were violently brought to heel by the emperor's army that had been bolstered by thousands of new recruits from Everyn.   In the few years since the end of the war, the Federation has faced a few small challenges, but overall it seems to be going strong. There are, naturally, currents of dissent and rebellion in the provinces - especially those that fought strongly against the Dumeiner forces. But at least on the surface, the Federation's overseers and practice of paying for cleanup and rebuilding cities has led to a general apathy toward, if not love or loyalty to, the Federation.

Demography and Population

The Federation is comprised of many different provinces and peoples, each with their own rich history and culture that has not yet been superseded by a national identity. Generally speaking, humans are the dominant race within the Federation, though depending on the province or even individual town one might see more gnomes or halflings than humans. In part due to the nature of the city of Everyn, the whole region is somewhat cosmopolitan in general, though there are a few towns or villages that are vaguely xenophobic toward the more "exotic" races that they are not used to seeing.

Military

The Federation maintains a large standing military, mainly for peacekeeping missions. Each of the constituent provinces were expected to muster at least 10% of their young adult population to be trained by the military leadership and sent off on peacekeeping missions elsewhere in the nation. While in training camp, these recruits are constantly watched and screened to see if they harbor any anti-Federation biases from their homelands. Places like Camp Bodwyn or Hillsborough Camp are centers of military training and indoctrination in the Federation, though specifically Bodwyn has long served that role for the Dumein Dominion.

Foreign Relations

Most of the powerful trading nations of the world were hesitant to do business with the Federation, but the ubiquity of some of the products forced their hand. Many other nations - namely Oestbernia, the Serene Republic, Ostrovenia, and Skerritt - are still icy toward the Federation and prefer to keep them at arm's length. The Federation has tried to send envoys and diplomats to most foreign nations, and they are generally welcomed then ignored. It seems most of the world is waiting to see if the Federation will last, as well as waiting for the memory of the 'barbaric' war of conquest to subside in the public eye.   The Federation has made slightly more inroads in the Toldrun See, which has welcomed the diplomats, though no trade deals or other agreement have yet been made. The See is happy to have a foreign 'ally' that does not treat them with immediate derision, though their foreign engagements are limited to their immediate geographic area. The Federation is on the other side of the world, and nonmagical means of communication take far too long for any meaningful negotiations to have happened yet.
