Hillsborough Camp

Among the Wessil Hills, this fortified town has stood as a military outpost for for several centuries. It was constructed during the height of the regional wars in the tenth century, when neighboring Brandis controlled territory within Wessil and were looking to expand further. To protect the trade route between the capital of Crabbe-by-the-Sea and various cities, the kingdom of Wessil built a military outpost to house a constant force.   In recent years, Hillsborough Camp was targeted by the Dumein Dominion during the Everyn War. During their conquest of Wessil, Hillsborough Camp was one of the main targets. Once conquered and occupied, this camp provided a base for Dumeinid soldiers to supply and besiege the town of Croppschire and later the capital. In the wake of the war, the Federation has maintained troops at the outpost - under the authority of the province of Wessil - to keep an eye on threats from the hills.

Demographics

Most of the soldiers and support personnel stationed here are of human descent, though there are halflings, dwarves, elves, and people of other races. In terms of "ethnicity" or region of origin, about a quarter of the camp is from Dumein or Tallstag, while the vast majority are Wessilite.   The soldiers stationed at the camp are typically engaged in training or drills, alternating with patrols out to the hills. Apart from that, the townsfolk are typically engaged in hospitality or supporting the soldiers via food, drink, smithing, armoring, and other such trades.

Government

The outpost is under the control of a Marshal appointed by Wessil, though approved by the authorities in Everyn. This officer runs every facet of the outpost, coordinating the patrols and training regimens. They are in charge of making sure the camp is stocked and supplied with everything it needs. Any criminal or other complaints are referred to this Marshal for arbitration or punishment.

Defences

While there is no stone wall on the perimeter of the camp, it does feature an exterior wooden palisade. The posts are sharpened and pointed slightly outward, to guard from attacks or roving beasts from the hills. This palisade was constructed when the outpost was, though it has been replaced and reconstructed several times over the centuries. Soldiers replace rotted or dilapidated posts as they wear out.   Four watchtowers are around the perimeter, on the cardinal direction sides. Each of these is topped with a warning bell, should it be necessary, and a long-range ballista to defend the outpost. These watchtowers are manned 24 hours a day, with contraptions to aid in nighttime scouting. These rudimentary contraptions resemble small wood ovens, with compartments to hold logs on fire, with mirrors on top to reflect the firelight out into the wilderness.

Infrastructure

The roads of the outpost are well maintained and allow easy travel for supply carts and marching infantry. They are maintained by the soldiers as part of their downtime and off-patrol duties. The water in the outpost is supplied by a large central well, which taps into an underground aquifer fed by runoff from the Wessil Hills. This well is connected to a series of pipes that provide running water to most of the outpost buildings. The tall windmill in the camp powers a series of bellows that keeps the smithy fires burning night and day, allowing weapons to be forged, honed, or melted down in shifts by more than a dozen smiths at the outpost.
