Spell Crystal, or Cristale'Ispilla (Crystals of Ispilla), is a crystalline mineral that has the ability to hold vast quantities of magical energy. Whilst all items can be imbued with magic, Spell Crystal seems to hold a special quality that allows it to absorb far more energy than any other material. Spell Crystal is very rare, amongst the rarest of minerals. It is found in small seams that appear to be scattered throughout the land. When imbued with magic, it is possible to change the hue of the crystal using that magic.Discovery
Cristale'Ispilla is referenced in the oldest surviving texts, suggesting it was found prior to the Age of Discovery. Since there appears to have been a great purge of documentation when the Age of Discovery began, it is unknown exactly when or where it was found. However, due to the first references being in the Elven language, it is presumed to have first been located in their territory. In the creation tale, Elves were the species created by Ispilla, the goddess of magic. Between these facts, no-one contests this presumption.Usage
Naturally, its ability to hold magical energy the way it does, means that it used by mages across the world as a storage device. Spell Crystal can hold all three magic types: Arcane, Divine and Natural. It also has no affinity to any one school of magic either, be it Enhancement or Curative or even Necromancy. It is thought the gem in The Amulet of Astrona Emberwild was replaced at some stage with Spell Crystal. Spell Crystals are what power most magical constructs, including the ones seen at Shortspark's Construct Fight Nights. However, no-one has managed fine tune constructs the way Grevlin Doomwrench did during the Cataclysm War. That, however, is matter of magical manipulation and/or technological invention rather than due to the Spell Crystal itself. Spell Crystal simply stores the raw magical power, what the magic does is a separate quandary. Spell Crystal is also the power source used to power The Cloudrunner, a skyship that travels between Dawnstone and the now isolated city of Esotar. Due to its rarity, the usage of Spell Crystal is largely limited to these endeavours.
