Redwoods

Geography

The Redwoods are located on the "border" of the Western Plains and the Central Wilderness, just below the southern offshoots of the Greiforn Mountains. The terrain is mostly plain, but in the most northern parts there are some rolling hills reaching the forest. The Bogbeast Rill flows though the most southern parts of the Redwoods, where it flows into the Crimson Shallows, the largest fresh water lake in all of Arregeas. The Redwoods are a landlocked forest.

Ecosystem

The Redwoods, as the name suggests, are a forest area, but despite its placement and surrounding climate, there are only deciduous trees, all with red leaves and red-ish wood. This should mean that in winter the trees are bare, but that's not the case. The trees do shed their leaves, but not at the same time. Some of them keep their leaves through winter and shed in spring, whereas others shed their leaves in autumn as usual. This means that the Redwood Elves re always sheltered by leaves.
The soil on which the Redwoods grow is brown podzol. It is slightly acidic, rich in iron and has a granular humus layer (mull), which is a porous mixture of organic material and mineral soil. Mull humus harbours many bacteria and invertebrate animals such as earthworms.
The Bogbeast Rill serves as a fresh water suply and keeps the ground around it moist and fertile, but during periods of heavy rain the area around the river often floods and turns muddy.

Ecosystem Cycles

Trees shed their leaves in autumn and spring and regrow them during spring and summer.
Spring is the procreating season for most if not all animals inhabiting the forest, and thus also the period where the Redwood Elves don't hunt in order to conserve the species they hunt. During that time they eat dried meat from former seasons and insects. The hunting season begins in late summer and ends in mid-winter.

Localized Phenomena

The Redwoods are special because of the exclusively red leafed trees. There are about eight different types of red leaved trees there that don't grow anywhere else in Arregeas.
Magic is very strong in this place and changed the Woodelves that settled there into a horned, sharp teethed, red haired, carnivorous species.

Fauna & Flora

Many different kinds of trees, shrubs, and herbs grow in the Redwoods. Most of the trees are broadleaf trees such as blood oak, red maple, sanguine beech, redbark elm, copper ash, redthorn, scarlet elder and fire chestnut. There are also several different kinds of plants like mountain laurel, flaming azaleas and mosses that live on the shady forest floor where only small amounts of sunlight get through.
Animals inhabiting the Reedwoods include snails, slugs, insects, spiders, reptiles and birds, as well as many cold-blooded vertebrates, such as snakes, frogs and salamanders. Mice, rabbits, foxes, deer, boars, otters and Redwood Elves are the most common mammals to be found in the Redwoods. There are also many different kinds of birds, such as woodpeckers, owls, hawks, thrushes, blackbirds, warblers and flycatchers.

Natural Resources

Obviously lumber, the fur and meat of animals and fresh water.

History

The Redwoods seem to have originated towards the end of the second age, but was uninhabited by sapient species until the woodelves moved there in the third age and became the Redwood Elves through a bloody war about magical runes, trigggered by the strong magic of the Redwoods.
After the bloodrune wars the Redwoods quieted down and flourished in the 4th age, unti they were almost destroyed in the magic wars during the 5th age. They managed to recover and are now more or less prospering again, with many trees growing back and animals returning to the woods.

Tourism

Almost none because of the bad reputation of the Redwood Elves. Humans won't go near the place, as they are convinced that the Redwood Elves are devils, but elves from Tilvin and Estira visit from time to time.
