Elf

Basic Information

Anatomy

Elves are humanoid bipedal beings with two arms, one head and one torso. They go upright and basically are upgraded humans.
All five sub-species are usually of a tall, slender build. They are strong and agile with long legs and all of them have pointy ears, even though the shape varies from sub-species to sub-species, which is one of the primary ways to tell them apart.

Biological Traits

All elvish sub-species have at least one other gender category beyond male and female. Both kaatin and deyan meadow elves as well as drifeyan sea elves have the concept of the twofold soul, the estirian wood elves talk about the god or godess's chosen ones, Redwood Elves:, Valmea: 4 genders.

Genetics and Reproduction

Elvish reproduction works quite similar to human reproduction (both species are believed to have a common ancestor after all). However, the entire process takes longer. An elvish pregnancy lasts somewhere around a year and female elves can only reproduce 2 to 3 times a year, instead of every month like humans.

Growth Rate & Stages

Elves grow very slowly. They reach maturity at around 50 years of age and after that they age very very slowly.
The transition from Infant to toddler takes about 8 years.
The "preschool" stage (I need to use human terms for this to make clear what I'm talking about) is from 8 to 17 years old.
The "grade school" stage is from 17 to 28 years old.
From 28 to 42 is the teenager stage where puberty kicks in and from 42 to 50 is the young adult stage.
After that they are fully grown and their brains have developed all functions. Now adult life begins. No one can agree what age counts as middle aged or elderly for elves because their life spans are so long. It is strongly debated whether elves are actually immortal or whether they just have incredibly long life spans that can reach multiple millennia. They do have the longest life spans among all known species either way, the dragons being the only other species believed to be immortal.

Ecology and Habitats

The most important thing for elves is to be close to other living things, especially plants, and even though they can survive in the more barren north or south, they generally fare better in milder conditions where many plants are growing. The one major exception being the northern sea elves.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Elves are omnivores, although many primarily eat plant based foods. The only notable exception is the Redwoodelves who are almost exclusively carnivorous.

Biological Cycle

Elves don't hibernate and they aren't affected much by the changing seasons.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Elves are known for their beautiful, symmetric faces with pronnounced cheekbones and clear cut jawlines.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Elves live all over Arregeas, but most of them live in the west.

Average Intelligence

Elves tend to be very intelligent, often exceeding the intelligence of humans.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Elves, no matter the sub-species, have enhanced vision, sight, smell and taste and they are the species most adept at using magic, which is due to their long lifespans that allow them to practie for longer than anyone else.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Naming traditions vary greatly, not only among the sub species, but among different countries.

Major Organizations

Drifeyer, Deya, Kaat, Estira, Valmea, Tilvin and New Talan are countries with mainly elvish populations.
Before the Magic Wars, Deya was known as Aetrin and there were two more countries with mainly elvish populations: Hirea and Isonia.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Drifeyan, Kaatim, Mer-Elvish, Khuikh Nashta and Naosh.

History

Elves are believed to be one of the oldest species after the Dragons. Their ancestors are said to have awoken during the second age of Arregeas and later split into five different sub-species to fill different ecological niches. In fact, they first split into three, the sea elves, the wood elves and the meadow elves, but the sea and wood elves later split into two species each: the northern and drifeyan sea elves and the estirian wood elves and the redwood elves.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

The elves have relations with many other species, most notably the humans and the dwarves. Even though elf-dwarf relations have been widely regarded as difficult, the drifeyan sea elves that live in Drifeyer, share their country with the western dwarves in relative peace and harmony.
Humans and certain animals, however, seem to be the elves' favourite allies.
Lifespan
Believed to be immortal.
Conservation Status
The elves are a flourishing species, except for the northern sea elves, they are at risk of going extinct.
Average Height
170 - 220 cm
Average Weight
50 - 80 kg
Average Physique
Elves are usually of slender, willowy build with slender muscles. Most of them look rather androgynous.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Elves, depending on their habitat have very light to very dark (albeit not in Arregeas, as the climate is too mild for that) skin. Redwood Elves have a green tint in their wood-like skintone, Drifeyan Sea Elves have parts of their bodies covered in green to blue scales, Northern Sea Elves have almost transluscent skin that shimmers in the colours of the rainbow when the sun hits it in the right angle and Estirian woodelves have tan/amber skin, more like tree bark than the inner wood of a tree.
