Western Plains

Geography

The Western Plains, as the name suggests, are a territory of flat grass land in the west of Arregeas. The Plains border the Norht Western Arm and Ahhot in the west, Büttiirr in the north, the Redwoods and Thumar in the west, and the Great Marshes, Deya and the Singing Waters in the south. The Feyr Wàmàr crosses through them and marks the borders of the Plains at some points. There is also the Bogbeast Rill flowing into the Crimson Shallows, the biggest fresh water lake in Arregeas and the Eerie Fen is part of the Western Plains as well.

Ecosystem

The Western Plains are a temperate grassland with dark, nutrient-rich soil. The dominant species is grass. Rainfall is moderate, which is the reason not too many trees grow, except at the outskirts of the Western Plains, close to the Feyr Wàmàr.

Ecosystem Cycles

Summers tend to be hot and witers are cold. Some birds, such as starlings, migrate to warmer places during the cold winter months, while others, such as the hedgehog hibernate.
Most rain falls in late spring and early summer, and during the autumn months, especially in Stormbloom, strong winds rage over the mostly flat terrain.
In particularly hot summers, wild fires can break out.

Localized Phenomena

Magic is very strong in the Plains, to the point where space is warped and distances can dramatically in- or decrease, and entire forests shift in and out of existence, always popping up in different locations.

Fauna & Flora

The Western Plains are covered in grass, wildflowers and herbs, some of them quite valuable, and even some shrubs and the occasional tree can be found there.
Regarding animals, there are many different types of birds, such as hawks, woodpeckers, cranes, doves, eagles, kites, herons, pheasants, starlings, storks, buzzards, crows and ravens. There are also small rodents such as mice, rats, moles, shrews and rabbits, as well as small lizards, snakes and frogs on the reptile side of things. For larger animals, the most notable ones are the horses of the nomads, but there are also deer, foxes, coyotes and occasionally wolves. There are also weasels, hedgehogs and bats.

Natural Resources

Grass, herbs, live stock.

History

The Western Plains have been an open grassland for thousands of years now. During the third age it was covered by snow and was largely uninhabited by sapient species, but in the fourth age the nation Enat established itself where the Eerie Fen lies nowadys. In the fifth age, a great demon destroyed Enat by drowning it in mud, thus creating the Eerie Fen. The survivors fled the place and became nomads. In the fifth age, magic started acting up in the pPlains, probably caused by the Magic Wars and all the warping of space really started then. It had happened before from time to time, but in the fifth age the occurences spiked and died down a little bit in the sixth age.
In the fourth age there also used to be one more river, which made the growth of trees easier, but the river got obliterated in the Magic Wars.

Tourism

Many people cross through the Plains on horseback or via ship. It's almost inevitable if one wants to take the land ways to or from the western nations of Arregeas. There are also quite a few herb collectors roaming the Plains for goods to sell, but most people aren't visiting as tourists or intend to stay. The Plains are simply to be crossed on the way to somewhere else.
