Eerie Fen

Geography

The Eerie Fen is a flat wetland at the northern borders of the Western Plains. The Bogbeast Rill, a river that comes off the Feyr Wàmàr, flows through the fen and feeds the wetland. The Feyr Wàmàr itself also crosses through the Eerie Fen.
The ground is muddy and flooded in some places and in others high grass grows.

Ecosystem

The Eerie Fen is a peat-accumulating wetland fed by mineral-rich ground and surface water. The ground is quite basic and high in mineral concentration. Many sedges and mosses cover the ground but there are also small trees with grey bark and grey leaves growing there. The Eerie Fen is highly biodiverse and the soil cycles nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus because of the lack of oxygen in the ground.
The Eerie Fen hosts many plants, most of them are grass like or mosses, but there are also unrooted trees lying on the muddy ground.

Localized Phenomena

For reasons unknown to anyone, there is always fog covering the ground of the Eerie Fen that carries a rotten smell and the water is pitch black. Voices echo there for no conceivable reason, there are whispers in the air coming from nowhere, as well as weird animal sounds. In the night strange lights float through the fog and voices sing songs in languages unknown to anyone. It's mostly like a humming sound but there are parts that do sound like words. No one knows where they come from.
It is said that there are demons, ghosts and evil spirits inhabiting the Fen and that anyone who enters it either doesn't make it out at all or loses their mind on their way through it. The place indeed does seem to have a negative affect on the psyche of those who stray into it, but it is unknown if that effect stems from the Fen itself or from the stories about it.

Fauna & Flora

As mentioned before, there are many types of grass growing in the Eerie Fen as well as mosses and small grey trees with grey leaves. There are some occasional bigger trees but most of them have been unrooted by something and are rotting in the mud.
Even though there are many animal sounds to be heard none of the explorers ever reported seeing so much as a bird. Insects, spiders and snails have been observed though.
According to myths there are demons, beasts and evil spirits living in the fen who are responsible for all the weird phenomena. Critics say it's simply the strong concentration of magic making all these things occur or maybe the magic is twisting and warping perceptions.

Natural Resources

Peat would be a great resource but no one dares venture there to make use of it. Even part of the Feyr Wàmàr had to be redirected around the fen so ships travelling on it could pass the fen without having to go through it.

History

The Eerie Fen used to be forestland that hosted a human Kingdom called Enat, but turned into a wetland during the Magic Wars. It is uncertain whether the disturbed and strengthened magic caused the transformation directly or if the alleged human sacrifices made by the then king have anything to do withit, but among the humans in the west, many stories and theories about the demise of Enat and the creation of the Eerie Fen are floating around:
Some say that in a catastrophic like event the entire kingdom got swallowed by mud and sank under the surface of the earth and now the vengeful spirits of the citizns of that kingdom haunt the fen. This story is highly dubious because there are no records available anywhere of such an event happening.
Others think that the kingdom transforming into a wetland had been caused by a curse or by a great beast taking up residence in Enat and eradicated all its inhabitants which now haunt the residence of the great beast that dwells in the middle of the fen.
There are several similar stories floating around but fact is taht none of these accounts are historically backed, but it is possible that there had been some kind of human interference going on that may have caused the stirred up magic to wreak havoc in former Enat. Most experts on the matter think that we'll never know the exact history of the Eerie Fen.

Tourism

There is no tourism to the Fen whatsoever, most people would rather die than enter the Eerie Fen and everyone generally steers clear from the place. Only a few curageous, or maybe foolish, adventurers dare entering the fen and most of them aren't the same when they return, if they return at all that is.
