Estirian Wood Elf

General Description:

Estirian wood elves are the older of two wood elven races. They characteristically have darker hair, mainly brown and black shades. They live and originated in the woods of Estira.

Other Names:

Eastern wood elves, Estirian elves, Wood elves

Conditions:

They aren't usually the victims of sickness, but there is an unusually high amount of broken limbs, cuts and bruised skin as living in the woods can be dangerous, even for elves.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Like all elvish races the Estirian Wood elves are of slim, graceful build. They are the shortest of the 5 elvish sub-species, even though in human eyes they'd still be regarded as tall. They have more bent ears than other elves and their hair is the darkest out of all of the elvish races. They also tend to be slimmer, probably an evolutive adjustment for climbing trees and weaving through the underbrush. They also tend to have sharper facial features and they might look scary to some because of that.

Biological Traits

The bentness of the ears does vary greatly.. Their hair colours vary from mid tone shades of brown to pitch black. They all tend to have straight hair though.
Height doesn't vary too much and most of them are a little bit over 170cm tall. There are exceptions of course, the royal lineage especially has a history of tall individuals, with the tallest ones close to 2m, which is very uncharacteristic for wood elves. The shortest elves live in the densest part of the Estirian Forest and are about 160cm tall. Male individuals tend to be taller than female individuals but their physical strength is about equal. Female individuals also tend to be more agile than male ones.

Ecology and Habitats

Wood Elves, as their name suggests, live in the woods, wich is their ideal habitat. They live on, in and under the trees. They love the shade and security the trees give them. Wood elves almost feel naked without trees around them and can become quite distressed if they have to leave the woods for longer periods of time.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They are omnivores and eat a lot more meat than most other elf species, except for the redwood elves who are exclusively carnivorous. Some common foods include: simmered deer back, tt nuts, pp salad, pickled falcon eye.

Biological Cycle

When the trees lose their leaves in winter, the elves that live there often migrate to areas with evergreen coniferous trees because the needles preserve warmth and save them from snow and rain. Since their house structures are very light and rely on the trees to give more protection, the yearly migration to the capital or down south to where it's warmer, is essential for the elves that live in the upper eastern and western parts of Estira because there the forest consists entirely of deciduous trees, but it still gets rather cold in winter.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

They have bent ears and very sharp facial features. To some they might look scary because of their harsher appearance. They also have something wild about them, a certain look in their eyes as if nature had taken possession of them almost.
They have dark eyes with colours of different brown, green and grey shades.
They have high cheekbones that are very prominent and are in general more angular than the softer looking meadow elves for example.

Common Etiquette Rules

They tend to be more tolerant of impoliteness and not going strictly by protocol. They're not ones for complex courtesies and like to be direct and honest. They are, however, extremely protective of nature and insulting it is worse than insulting them directly.
They are rather unforgiving of intruders in their territory or people who disregard their rules about nature, especially concerning trees. Therefore, they tend to have a quick temper and they're not that understanding of people disrespecting their policies out of ignorance. They can also come across as rude due to their blunt, brutally honest character. They're not ones to sugarcoat things which sometimes makes it hard to be diplomatic with them. They generally aren't interested in relationships with other countries that much as they much rather keep to themselves and look after their flora and fauna. You could say they're a species of hermits.

Common Dress Code

Light tunics that end on mid thigh length, tight suede pants with reinforced knees and inner thighs for tree climbing, leather boots with good soles and arm protectors as well as elbow protectors are worn often as it helps climbing. They do wear long capes occasionally but it is considered more formal wear or travel wear that leads out of the woods.
As far as outer wear goes, shoulder length, close fit hooded capes are a lot more common as it doesn't hinder climbing and running through the woods.

History

They used to be just wood elves but when they split with what would later become the REdwood Elves in ESS, they started calling themselves Estirian Woodelves, after their new home, Estira.

Common Myths and Legends

They believe that there is a bigger all encompassing consciousness through the trees, which is the final reincarnation stage, therefore trees are sacred and some trees are even so sacred that no one is allowed to touch them. They also believe that the wilderness is greater than anything they or any other species could ever build which is why they build with as little interference as possible.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

There aren't many relations to other species except for trees and forest animals which the elves have very close bonds with.
Other elves or humans or dwarves don't concern them and if anything they view them as threats to their environment. In the past they did have close relation to other elves but not anymore.
Their closest bond is with their cousins, the Redwood Elves.
