Central Wilderness

Geography

The Central Wilderness is located in the middle of the arregean continent. It borders Estira in the east, River Bay in the south, the Redwoods in the west, and the Greiforn mountains in the north. The Central Wilderness is a largely uninhabited territory, as the magic is so strong only plants, mushrooms and certain animals can survive there. As the epicentre of magic streaming into the earthly realm from the void, chasms have opened in the otherwise mainly flat terrain and there are huge stalagmite formations, rocks suspended in the air and many floating islands. Some of the smaller chasms are filled with boiling, red water.

Ecosystem

The ecosystem is very much governed by the central source of magic, which spreads out and permeates everything. The air always feels and smells charged with ozone. Magic is ripping deep chasms into the ground, suspending chunks of earth in the air and forming giant stalagmite formations. It also makes a lot of strange plants and giant mushrooms that glow in the dark grow there. Father away from the source, moss covers the ground even though there are no trees giving it shade. Many parts are also barren and more in line with the mostly cool, semi-arid continental climate you would expect for the region. Because of the magic source, however, the central wilderness is impossible to categorise into a certain climate because it's constantly changing. The Quick Water runs through the area and into the sea at River Bay, bringing some humidity to the Central Wilderness, and there is a nameless river as well, which flows into the deepest, biggest chasm right at the centre of the continent.
Overall it can be said that the northern parts are generally colder and feature a taiga to tundra biome where they reach the Greiforn Mountains.
In the south, where the Central Wilderness borders the sea, the climate is a lot more humid and warm. Winters there are also less harsh and summers warmer.
Towards the east and the west forests grow and transition into a more stable humid continental climate as the effect of magic lessens.

Ecosystem Cycles

The only constant in the Central Wilderness is change. One day it might feel like winter, the next it's swelteringly hot. The plants that grow there have to be very adaptable, as do the animals.

Localized Phenomena

Thunderstorms, hail, strong gusts of winds and tornadoes all occur in the Central Wilderness. The most prominent phenomenon is of course the magc seeping through to this world. Not only does it suspend huge parts of earth and rock in the air, it also warps space, similar to the Western Plains. Instead of shifting forests however, the earth itself shifts sometimes, as well as clouds, lightning, rocks, stalagmites and even storms.

Fauna & Flora

Many plants such as blue grass growing on patches of red earth, moss and many huge ranks that grow in the chasms, as well as sky trees that are so tall they reach high into the sky. There are also giant mushrooms and a lot of bioluminescent plants and plants that vaguely resemble cacti.
Animals that survive in the area are minly bugs, worms and other insects, but also snakes and lizards. Bigger animals are rare, but include the kirin, the two-headed skeleton horse, the wendigo and the white horned wolf.

Natural Resources

The earth is rich with iron, lucrine, stone, natural gasses and more, but information is sparse.

History

It is estimated that magic broke through to the earthly realm in the first age, but no one can say when exactly. One thing, however is clear: the magic source has not always been as big as it is now. The epicentre, zone one, two and three all used to be much smaller, but over time, more magic began to seep through and the zones slowly spread out all over the continent and into the atmosphere. However, the Magic Wars have drastically accelerated the spreading of the inner zones, especially one and two, which resulted in certain areas becoming uninhabitable and even a part of Estira is affected, because the most western part of the forest has now entered zone one and become a dead zone for any elves who previously lived there.

Tourism

The fringes of the Central Wilderness attract scientists and magic users alike, who are trying to study the core of magic and all localised phenomena, but since it's such a dangerous location, only a selected few are allowed permission to enter the area, and most others have enough common sense to go nowhere near the epicentre or even zone one.
