The Frayed

The Frayed are a species of mortals, found on Apa Axas. The Frayed are a unique species, even for a native people of Lucidity. Born from the song of an insane College of Imagination Bard, known as Valence, the Usurper and baring remarkable similarities to Ghosts, The Frayed are also known as “Partial People” to most of Lucidity, however, calling a Frayed this will often be met with hostility. The Frayed are a relative new race on Lucidity, and live in small collectives, such as Frayed Village that are fiercely wary of outsiders. This is understandable, as since their creation, other races have sought to exploit and enslave them, even in birth. To a Frayed, Free Will isn’t just something that is given to you, it is something that is fought over; something that can be stripped away from you at any moment, and something that each and every Frayed will be willing to lay down their lives to protect.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Frayed are unnatural creatures, designed by a madman and, as such, their grasp on reality is tenuous, both literally and figuratively. As a side effect of their unconventional birth, the Frayed are only half present on Apa Axas, with the threat of slipping permanently into The Ethereal Plane is a very real and ever present danger.   Existing in two realms simultaneously grant the Frayed some unusual characteristics; aesthetically, they look alike to Humans or Elves, with a large range of skin tones, although they are noticeably more pallid in complexion, bare blank whited eyes, and bare intricate runes on their rune, resembling tattoos or scars. These runes bare the sigil of their creators, often Valence’s, and their presence is of paramount importance, bequeathing the Frayed with the ability to retain a stable form while on Apa Axas, as well as marking the Frayed as the possession of the Bard. More enlightened College of Imagination Bards often choose to forgo a personal sigil, instead choosing a more natural symbol, such as foliage or protection seals, as to allow the Frayed to gain as much independence as possible.   The Frayed’s connection to the Ethereal Realm allows them abilities similar to a ghost or spectre, such as levitation, limited incorporeality, the ability to inflict fear on their enemies and temporary invisibility. These abilities, combined with their ghostly appearance and tendency to slip out of reality, have caused the locals of Lucidity to dub the Frayed as “The Partial People”. This nickname is greeted with disdain by the Frayed, reasoning that it questions the Frayed’s right to exist on Apa Axas and reinforces the view that they are lesser than other races.

Naming Traditions

The Frayed have a wide variety of names, due to their origins of being woven into existence by others, and as such, they are often granted names by their creators, according to their culture and whims. However, there does seem to be some convention in these names. Those Frayed who are considered Valence’s Chosen have short names, often barked at them like orders from their creations, while more Independent Frayed tend to be more poetic, and selected by themselves as they Awaken, and represent what the Frayed either views their position in the world to be, what they wish to be, or a concept they most associate with.
