Structure

  • Ar dtús: The First. Ioth, founder of the Academy, has the final say.
  • Ciallmhar: Savants. Highest rank in the academy. Originally held by Ioth and his seven companions, their numbers have dwindled over the years.
  • Iontaofa: The Trusted. A more formal governing body. The Savants are little bound by them, but the Iontaofa see to the actual governance and organization of the school. Where the Savants are focused on their research and the esotery of magic, the Ioantaofa are concerned with the practical matters of running a school in a world under siege.
  • Máistir: The Masters. Preeminent practitioners of their specific magical arts. It is rare for more than one Master to exist in a specific field, though it is possible. Many Masters are counted among the Iontaofa, but not all of them.
  • Draoi: Mage. This title is bestowed on graduates of the academy. They have more to learn, but they are no longer students--instead, they become Eternal Learners.
  • Airíoch: Caretaker. Minor spellcasters who attend to the needs of the academy. Many of them watch over the Dalta or work the kitchens/similar tasks.
  • Dalta: Pupils. Students in their first seven years at the academy.

Culture

Ioth and his companions are the progenitors of Múinteoirí culture

Core Values

  • Education
  • Beauty
  • Preservation
Ioth Academy was established to share the wisdom of the past with future generations and mortal kind. They see themselves as caretakers, curators of priceless beauty that must not be lost. Deference for the lost light of Luminias is at constant odds with magical innovation.   When the Demonic Imperium began, the value of Preservation swiftly overtook the value of Education. Both remain important, but the Múinteoirí see ugliness and ignorance surrounding them and see themselves now more than ever as guardians more than caretakers.

Public Agenda

Share the knowledge of magic and the beauty of the past with the world Preserve the teachings of magic and the memory of Luminias

Assets

The Múinteoirí are in control of the largest known concentrated pocket of Dawn Magic in Anacra. They've used this to create Ioth Academy. They have access to more sheer magical might and knowledge than anyone else in the world.

History

Before the founding of Ioth Academy, Ioth and his companions formed the identity of the group that would one day become the Múinteoirí. They traveled across the Four Kingdoms, studied the mysteries of the Emerald Tablets, debated the genies of Irolek monastery and battled the cunning infernal Xethius, who sought to thwart their endeavors. During this time they came to cherish the mortal species rising all around them and believed that the only way to preserve the lost beauty of Luminias was to spread its teachings and memory to the next generation.   In 5607 Ioth and his companions raised the great Golden Sphere around the Dawn Pocket they discovered and issued a call to all the nearby tribes and clans, summoning them to learn the secrets of the age before and share that wisdom with their peoples.   In 6412 Uzhul the Destroyer plunged the world into the Demonic Imperium. Ioth Academy was one of the first targets. Xethius had not forgotten the work of Ioth and the companions in spreading knowledge, and sought to ensnare and devour the golden sphere. Threats from within and without tore the academy apart. Several apostates were cast out from the Múinteoirí, who closed their ranks and became cautious to the point of paranoia.   Nonetheless they endured, and after their victory survivors from nearby cultures flocked to the edges of the Golden Sphere for protection. The entire recruiting and admission process for the Academy changed. No longer could they afford to simply open their arms to all those seeking knowledge of any kind. Instead, highly perceptive mages used divination to locate those with magical potential.   As the centuries wore on, Ioth withdrew more and more from the active management of the Múinteoirí, leaving it to the Ciallmhar and Iontaofa. The Refugee settlement surrounding the Academy grew and grew into a slum city of its own, with a golden center of magical wonder at its heart.

Preserve what can be preserved, redeem what can be redeemed, mourn what must be lost.
