Hondarahl

A primarily dwarven city, Hondarahl is built into The Iron Spine mountains, north of Dor Vonul. Access to the city is controlled through a large fortress gatehouse, known as The Bastion of Steel, or simply the Bastion. Inside this keep lies a huge elevator that leads down into the city itself, a large cavern beneath the surface. The elevator is large enough for several dozen people to ride at once, and takes twenty minutes to complete a trip. It consists of an ironwood cage, the origin of which is a closely guarded secret among the noble houses. The cage is suspended on huge iron chains, each link almost half the height of a Dwarf, fed off large reels by complex machinery guarded closely in the Bastion. The chains are forged deep within the city itself, in the kingdom's largest forge, Metal Mastery, which is fuelled by magma brought up from deeper under the mountains using adamantine alloy piping.

Demographics

Hondarahl is a primarily dwarven city, the only one of its kind in Amion since the coup of Dor Vonul. While the majority of the population is made up of dwarves, they do not push other species away. Many humans make their home underneath the Iron Spine in the city, and even a few elves, though more drow than other kinds. Halflings and gnomes both have small communities within Hondarahl, with gnomes being heavily tied into crafting and tinkering guilds.

Government

Hondarahl is governed by one of its noble clans, chosen every ten years by a democratic vote between each clan. They are forbidden to vote for themselves, and the clan with the largest number of votes installs its leader as city viscount. In the event of a drawing number of votes, another vote is taken, with only those part of the draw being available options. It is unknown what might happen if there continues to be draws, as this has yet to happen in the city's history.   The current ruling clan is Clan Anvilheart, led by Lommak Anvilheart. However, he spends the majority of his time in Dawnshield, dealing with politics and other matters in the capital. His eldest daughter, Desseala Anvilheart is left in charge while he is away, with Lommak's wife having passed away years ago.

Industry & Trade

Hondarahl produces the majority of Avalyra's iron, ensuring the kingdom remains armed and armoured throughout its history. Along with the huge complexes of their iron mines, the city and the tunnels below are home to many productive copper and tin mines. The production of these metals has led to Hondarahl becoming an economic powerhouse, with its leader traditionally having large sway in kingdom politics.
