The Golden Sea

Geography

Jutting out into the Mor Kreizdouar, the Golden Sea is actually a peninsula and series of archipelagos. Situated on the northern shores of that inland sea, it is located due East of the Shatterlands and West of the Sea of Wine. This central location and temperate climate has made the region an agricultural and mercantile powerhouse, a collection of merchant hill-towns and ports.   The Northern border, shared with Arle and Tolosa is dominated by the Meneziou Gwenn, a range of tall, snowcapped mountains that have long divided the region from direct Gallian influence. The Meneziou Gwenn continues Southwards, forming the "spine" of the Peninsula.   As rivers flow down from the mountains, the foothills give way to rolling hills and vast fields and plains, a fertile land that cements the regions agricultural power.   The coastline is varied, ranging from long sandy beaches to rocky cliffs. Waters are generally navigable, known for easy navigation.

History

Following a period of tribal rule, the region fell under the early control of the Empire, serving as a crucial trade hub overseeing it control of the Mor Kreizdouar, becoming a wealthy and powerful region of the union. The region was largely spared the immediate destruction surrounding the Tearing of the Great Veil, maintaining imperial administration for some time beyond other regions, but its wealth drew the attention of raiders and invaders. This, along with internal strife as regional governors sought to establish themselves in the power vaccuum, leading to the collapse of the area's infrastructure and the rise of independent city-states and petty kingdoms.   Into the mix arrived emissaries of the Southern Church, having arrived from Outremer a few centuries earlier and establishing themselves in the the city of Lupino. Although lacking the direct administrative control of its Imperial predecessors, the Church was able to establish itself as the spiritual and political center of the region. With its central position and bureaucratic cohesion, the Church spread out from Lupino, reaching all corners of Letha, bringing that power and wealth back to the area. This seemingly constant flow of goods and wealth into and out of the region gave the Peninsula its current moniker, the Sea of Gold.   Following the forced relocation of the Church from Lupino to Gallian controlled Avinhon, as well as the advent of Windships, new players have arisen to challenge the city's historic position as the cultural centre of the Golden Sea. Among these are the river city Gigliata, the hilltown Balzana and the floating city Serenissima. This rivalry has spurred the various cities and regions in bids to outdo their neighbors in opulent shows of civic pride and martial power. The Golden Sea has become synonymous with grand displays of wealth and largesse, but also complex political machinations as merchants and nobility struggle for primacy.
