Lesser Demons

The Blood-Brood

Society is a silly thing, isn't it? A messy web of names and relationships, of individual souls with individual desires, some of which can only be achieved through mutual agreement.   When such agreements begin to lose their meaning or are even outright broken, the Blood-Brood are a sign of the consequences.   Blood-Brood demons are essentially demonic rats with mangy, blood-red fur and disease-ridden spurs of bone jutting from their bodies. Wherever you find one, not only can you be sure that the surrounding civilization is suffering the symptoms of social decay, but you can also be sure that there are more of the nasty critters - many, many more.   Despite their sinister name, the Blood-Brood are - in reality - just souped-up rats. They overrun and devour pretty much any other pests in the area, and then proceed to cause the kinds of infestation problems that rat swarms are wont to do, simply posing more of a threat than normal.   The Blood-Brood have a Brood Mother back in the Demon Realm; she is their loving matron, and she enjoys watching her spawn spread across the world from the safety of her lair.

Imps

Imp demons: a classic example of a Lesser Demon. They may not have size or strength, but they can be pretty clever or quick, and there's always menial labor to be done that more important demons are too busy to worry about.   Small and lean humanoids with wings, horns and tails, the appearance of an imp is determined by where they spawned in the Demon Realm. There are barren wasteland imps with cracked, sandy skin, obsidian horns and claws, and venomous quills; demon city imps with scaly black or red skin, crystalline horns, and Baelfire magic far too weak to ultimately annihilate any soul; deep, abyssal core imps with albino skin and eyes, gem-like horns, and frigid, sub-zero magery alike to the Veil-Touched; and more.   The common theme of the imp is that of the underdog, and of the lowly servant who knows their place but who loves to push the limits. They may be particularly pernicious, chaotic, or lazy at times, but ultimately they get the job done by the end of the day. They make for... acceptable secretaries, laborers, and even familiars, and are the unsung heroes of demons and witches alike.   Imps grow from trees in the Demon Realm; they usually take to forming gangs that roam that hellscape's various biomes, until they are eventually sought out and recruited into service for the Dark God.

Demons

The Legion

War is an ever-present element of reality. No matter what time period or location you look at, there's always somewhere on Aelladore where conflict rages on. Being a source of many woes, it isn't hard to imagine a type of demon born from war. When a soldier Corrupts themself by taking things too far - giving in to fear, vengeance, greed, or powerlust - they become demons consigned to The Legion.   Members of The Legion look quite like they did when they were mortal, save for a few key differences: far darker coloration, demonic attributes like horns, tails, wings or scales, glowing purple eyes, and a brand upon their back in the shape of their personal demon sigil.   The Legion is the military of the Dark God: It's standard armed forces complete with distinct armor and weapon styles, colors and heraldry, unit types like infantry and cavalry, and a militaristic hierarchy of superior officers.   While they don't see much time on Aelladore - only ever summoned during major assaults by the Dark God like the Great Wars or the Eclipse Wars - they do adhere to a constant training regimen in the Demon Realm, and are occasionally pitted against each other in friendly competitions.   Each member of The Legion has had years upon years of training and experience; while they aren't particularly more powerful than they were when they were mortal, they have a distinct edge over enemy forces that are even average or less in competence levels. To properly counter the numbers, experience, and tactics of The Legion, one can only hope that they have access to an elite fighting force prepared to defend themselves - and even then, a prayer to the Lights will go a long way.

Basker Hounds

When dogs become mad or sick and have to be put down, their souls find a place in the Demon Realm; the Dark God soothes them with the cool touch of shadows, and transforms them into what are known as Basker Hounds.   Basker Hounds are midnight black canines of impressive size, equipped with an appalling extra set of arms designed to be wicked and articulate like a person's. These extra arms can burrow in and out at any point of the Basker Hound's torso, maximizing it's maneuverability or offense.   These creatures represent fear of the unknown, and fear of the dark; they are ambush predators who are one with the shadows.   In the Demon Realm and in interacting with other demons, Basker Hounds are a demon's best friend: guard dogs, hunting partners, and loyal companions. Witches and warlocks might summon them to hunt someone or something down, and demons who spawn with them can command them to act as scouts, spies, or assassins.

Etherix

(EE-thurr-iks)   These creatures are symbiotic salamander pets that higher-level demons keep to augment their supply of magical energy. Etherix are glowing salamanders about the size of a monitor lizard, with three sets of wispy wings that billow in the wind like fabric, and round, smooth bodies that are actually kinda cute.   Etherix do not fight; instead, their bodies are living conduits of Veil energy, acting like a vacuum that swallows up spells and other forms of magic to then store within their bodies as if they were batteries.   One fatal flaw does exist in this type of demon, however: they cannot stop accepting energy into their bodies, meaning that they can be overloaded and killed. Doing such a thing causes the offending Etherix to bloat up like a balloon, before finally popping in a dazzling explosion.   But beware: Etherix are capable of self-detonating, sapping every last ounce of magic out of the nearby atmosphere to induce an explosion themselves, essentially suicide bombing their victims.   Aside from being living explosives that demons can throw to devastating effect, the aforementioned higher-level demons keep them to actually use the energy they store, refilling their reserves for more demon magic to inflict upon the world. A demon with an Etherix pet can be a daunting combination to face.   Etherix spawn from birthing pools located all along The Ocean of It's Malcontent - a sea of black ooze made of raw, undiluted negative energy, which connects every separate landmass of the Demon Realm. These creatures represent a spiteful, yellow type of hatred toward Kin, and that theme is reflected in their design.

Greater Demons

Torturer Demons

Torturer demons serve multiple different roles at once, all centered around the gift they've received from the Dark God: full capability and jurisdiction to use baelfire.   The most important role of a Torturer demon is to punish evil souls - to score them with baelfire just enough to cause the most agonizing pain in the universe, but not enough to annihilate them entirely. This process produces energy, which is then used to fuel the wicked machines and other innovations used throughout the Demon Realm.   Aside from their main task, Torturers are blacksmiths, engineers, architects, and other tactile thinkers. If you were to happen upon a demonic artifact - especially a weapon, a set of armor, or a maleficent tome - you could be almost entirely certain that a Torturer demon was involved in the process of its creation in some way or another.   Torturers are the lifeblood of demon civilization, powering and advancing their technologies.   Torturers come in many forms, all of which can resemble monsters or men. Their aesthetic usually involves cold hearts, singed hands (or claws, or paws, or pseudopods), and other basic demonic traits. Each one is sculpted personally by the Dark God Itself out of elements of the Demon Realm, equipped with the special lack of true humanity that it takes to inflict unimaginable anguish in perpetuity.

Apollyon Demons

(uh-PAH-lee-on)   Apollyon demons are named after Apollyon himself: Doom Incarnate, and The Angel of the Bottomless Pit. King Apollyon is said to have been a Herald of Azariel, if not the first Herald; when his sadistic pleasure in destruction itself caught the attention of Azariel, she was forced to fight him to the death, but couldn't bring herself to slay him and instead cast him into a chasm where he would never be able to rise out of... where he should never be able to rise out of.   Made in the image of their king, Apollyon demons have massive size, demonic horns, and clipped wings; they are musclebound brutes who come in all types of colors and textures - canvases painted by the whims of Apollyon himself when they were created. Your standard Apollyon demon is well taller than the average Helyr Valla, designed for maximum physical potential.   When an Apollyon demon spawns on Aelladore, it immediately sets to it's task with eagerness and glee, wielding whatever weapon they favor and fighting in whatever style suits their personality as they demolish buildings and slay indiscriminately. Men, women, children: none are safe from an Apollyon demon's eternal quest for the euphoric sense of pride and accomplishment that fills them when they leave nothing but gore and rubble in their wake.

Grinning Barons

There are many types of greed in this world: greed for money, greed for power, greed for indulgances and vice. Those whose ambitions devour so selfishly everything good around them in single-minded pursuit of these goals soon become Corrupted.   Take, for example, a noble: one whose eye sparkled with joy in the reflection of gold and gems. As they continued to spin their political machinations for more power and wealth, they slowly grew fat - seemingly on luxuries, but the truth was much more sinister - and their grin slowly grew wider and wider...   Grinning Barons are obese, corpulent humanoids whose gluttony bloats their limbs, swallowing their joints and knuckles up with flesh. They have wide, shark-toothed mouths that split their faces from ear to ear whenever they smile, and their tongues are whip-like, barbed with a paralyzing stinger at the end. When they appear on Aelladore, they can assume a Kin-like disguise - though they cannot help but seem at least heavyset in build.   On Aelladore, Grinning Barons specialize in getting things done: organizing people, calling the shots, and generally getting what they want. They are the quintessential drug lords, crime kingpins, and worm-tongued advisors, sitting in the middle of a web of connections, lies, and minions, subtly pushing and pulling from behind the scenes to achieve their goals. They feed on power, on knowledge, and on secrets, especially ones that can be used to blackmail, subvert and corrupt others.   Given time, a Grinning Baron can even spread their influence throughout an entire nation, bending it in any direction the Dark God desires. These demons have been used before to execute on long-awaited plans that have inflicted countless tragedies, the most notable of which was their instrumental use in the Eclipse Wars that turned the tables in evil's favor.

Outlaw Demons

Everyone seeks something in this life: goals are the foundation of a healthy future and a healthy mind, focusing our attentions and distracting us from darker inclinations. Some people are very good at achieving their goals, acting with professionalism and grace, going the extra mile, and never stopping until their work is done.   When such an individual's goal is itself a dark inclination, however, they risk Corrupting themself into an Outlaw demon.   Outlaw demons are demonic bounty hunters: professional warriors and mercenaries who are summoned to go after targets or marks, often at the behest of a vengeful or desperate patron. Outlaws carefully negotiate the terms of every deal make, including cost (with various Outlaws preferring different forms of pay), time allotted, collateral damage, supplies, and so on and so forth.   The infamy of Outlaw demons is so great that when one hears that an Outlaw is involved in matters, it tends to make one think twice about stepping in. They may look funny with their wide-brimmed hats and exotic arms common to the Golden Isles, but they aren't people you mess around with.   These demons, however, like to negotiate for longer times and supplies, whereupon they get to have their fun on Aelladore - to spread more chaos and destruction before taking out their target. For instance, if an Outlaw has to kill a dangerous fugitive or baron, the demon won't go after them right away; they'll infiltrate and help the target, furthering the target's goals and creating more strife and suffering, before finally taking the target out at the last moment.   There's a common saying among the Outlaws: "Never betray the original deal; never go back on your word". Unless something goes horribly awry, an Outlaw finds satisfaction in working within their deals, such a challenge appealing to their daredevil hearts. After all, when you always come back and are immortal, you've gotta find ways to enjoy life.   Outlaw demons are also known as Hellwalkers: they wander the various biomes of the Demon Realm while they wait to be summoned, honing their skills on the diverse array of harsh, unforgiving landscapes therein.

Weaver Demons

Not all demons are made; some are born, manifesting in any number of ways in the various biomes of the Demon Realm, rather than being Corrupted Kin from Aelladore who've been damned for all eternity. Imps, for example, grow on trees in the Demon Realm, and are considered "natural" demons - though Kin can also Corrupt themselves into lowly Imps.   The Weavers, however, are all-natural; they have existed in the Demon Realm ever since its inception, and no person has ever become a Weaver demon.   Scholars and sages theorize that the Weavers of the Demesne were born not from the Dark God's will, but from the echoes of It's dreams. Whatever the case, Weaver demons are removed from many of demonkind, existing largely outside the hierarchy that so governs other demons - not that they would defy the will of an Archdemon, but their ethereal domain ensures that they are largely separate and independent.   All demons trade in pacts and favors, but few save the most powerful and experienced among them do so with the proficiency of the Weavers. Barely corporeal even within their own home in the Demesne, they build their strength upon complex webs of debt and magic with any and all creatures that dream - for despite being entities born of fear, a dream without dreamers to carry it is hardly anything at all. Summoners seeking to forge a pact with a Weaver demon summon them not into the material world, but into their dreams, forging the terms there as they would within the waking world.   Weaver demons appear in many dreams, though their dreamers tend not to realize it; they can shapeshift at will, rarely ever revealing their true forms in all their eldritch, inhuman glory. The terror they inflict is no cheap trick, no simple wave of the hand: it is a careful orchestration of events that takes time to craft and careful observation of the victim's weaknesses to have any impact.   Weavers take pleasure in analyzing and deconstructing those who dream bit by bit, and are the source of many - but not all - nightmares. Some Weavers take a different approach to terror, as well, in the form of sleep paralysis, night terrors, and more.

Archdemons

Deavante, the Blood That Runs Black

(dee-uh-VAHN-tay)   The tales surrounding the Black Blade were many: traitor, Kinslayer, murderer, blood-mad berserker. A mad elf from a shattered utopia with an insatiable thirst for blood and slaughter, drifting through the dark places of the world and leaving only horror in his wake; an agent of darkness with an appetite for carnage deep enough to see all life slain in the hope that he might sate his fury; a beast in human shape with nothing but hate behind his dark eyes.   Now - as a full demon - Deavante takes on the form of a weapon that it's pactmaker favors most, but there are a few features which remain constant across it's many incarnations. First, it is forged mostly of an alien black metal which reflects the light faintly in tinges of violet and red. Second, just beneath the blade or at whatever could be considered it's core is a space where a large gem might be fitted - instead of a gem, however, a foul mimicry of a beating heart rests, matching the wielder's heartbeat.   When Deavante chooses a wielder, it seeks a like-minded partner: someone with a deep-seated rage, a vendetta that inspires them to kill, or someone who finds simple pleasure in destruction itself. It does not communicate with words, but instead shares an empathic link with it's wielder, guiding their actions, inflaming their negative emotions, and even occasionally showing them dreams. This practice tends to make it very good at turning it's victims into Blackguards.   But alas, the Black Blade has been lost to history for some time; not even the Dark God can pinpoint it's location. Should this unholy artifact ever be found, however, it's wrath will return like never before.

Akeiba the Unchained

(ah-KEE-bah)   This creature was once an animal, a loyal dog to an increasingly abusive master. He endured the tortures inflicted by his master for years and years, until one day he snapped, retaliating and killing them. He became a Spirit of vengeance that day, roaming the land in search of any who would abuse their power. His domain in the Demon Realm is a haven for the neglected and mistreated, and a special circle of hell for his prey to find their damnation in.   Akeiba is usually joined by an unspeaking cat familiar named Baeowin (BAY-oh-win) ; something about her gives detailed observers a sense that she has endured much the same treatment as her master in the past, if not more.

Crimson Sheva

(SHEE-vuh)   This woman is one of the most dangerous demons on Aelladore; not only does she appear as if she were totally human, but she is a master martial artist imbued with volcanic powers of fire and lightning - she is an avatar of destruction, an unstoppable force that few warriors could ever hope to measure up to when pitted face-to-face.   She does have one fatal flaw, however: she cannot exist during the day. Sunlight destroys her body rapidly.   Rather than going on killing sprees and invoking natural disasters, then, Crimson Sheva takes a far more subtle approach to the prime directive. She takes on an unassuming form and alias, before finding a vulnerable target to practice her skills of manipulation on, training them to fight and building a bond with them so that she can continue to lead them down a path of darkness.   She doesn't use her magic during this time - careful not to even hint at her true nature - instead relying on her martial prowess alone and downplaying her abilities as much as possible. Eventually, her masterful manipulation and careful schemes are the good old-fashioned tactics that she takes particular pleasure in using to bring her victims to the Dark God's side, turning them into devoted Blackguards.

Va-Kannizar, Father of the Stillborn, Lord of the Wisps

Legends tell of the one and only Archdemon born from a Star Spawn: no longer mortal, but a blazing core of raw Baelfire fueled by the Dark God Itself, floating as if in a cage of Star Metal in overlapping patterns.   Va-Kannizar knows more than any other that there are monsters in this world: not goblins or orcs, but true monsters, creatures worse than demons. Monsters who neglect or even torture children. When a child is taken from this world before their time, it is Va-Kannizar who embraces them in death; he adopts them as his own and ensures that the suffering they experienced in life will not be in vain.   His children are called Will-o-Wisps: balls of living Baelfire the size of a Nova - destroyed minds with simple pleasures, haunting Aelladore with childlike sadistic glee.

Unnamed Archdemons

  • A talented singer and musician with a beautiful voice. While exquisite to hear and capable of bringing people to tears or even into a state of euphoria, the content of her songs have a Lovecraftian quality of madness to them, causing people to become despondent, empty, and ultimately depressed to the point of drastic action - usually murder, of oneself or of others. These husks are then animated into service by the very same dirge of doom which emptied them.
  • A creature made of dreamstuff which finds a target in whatever settlement they are at and take on the form of someone which this person will most desire. Their voice, their mannerisms, and their actions are all designed to coax the target into a deep sense of warmth, coziness, and safety, and soon enough the demon becomes very close very quickly. As they continue with their plan, they orchestrate events so that one by one, their target's friends and family begin to fall away, until eventually they are the only one their target can rely on and believe in and trust; it is at this point that they convince their target to be the catalyst for some event of great chaos or destruction, using whatever abilities or resources this person is bound to have been chosen for
  • Similar but opposite to the demon above, this creature instead takes on the form of the target's worst nightmare. They haunt them for days, weeks, even months, increasing the emotional trauma they inflict by yet another degree every time, until their target breaks - in spectacular fashion, and with only the bloodiest colors of the rainbow. After the deed is done, they consume the whimpering mess of negative energy they have created, increasing their power
  • A round table of strategic, warlike knights of death and destruction, each of them always followed by a single devotee or a harem of doe-eyed demon girls. They treat their girls terribly - largely ignoring them and basically abusing them - but the girls seem to love it, and wouldn't want it any other way. As for the knights' tactics when they come to the material world, they spread like a great army, conquering the world the old-fashioned way through blood and death, recruiting the new demons brought by the tragedies they incur, and seizing territory until they cannot be ignored
  • One of the most powerful demons of the Demon Realm, this entity is an entropic black hole that consumes energy and positive emotion. When it appears, it slowly roams the landscape, wilting fauna and flora of all of their vitality, and wisking away entire villages of people - gently, in their sleep. The only way to defeat this force of nature is to arm yourself with enough positive energy to counteract it long enough to fight - and even that is a legendary feat, given the Lovecraftian aura of despair and madness it emits
  • A powerful, charismatic witch with a demonic bunny familiar. She travels the world in search of nations that are on their decline, before settling there and scrying for information on the corruption and other flaws that exist in these places. Her surveillance done, she brings this news to the masses and spreads it far and wide, stirring up discontent and a desire for change in the people - any kind of change, at any cost. Finally, she gathers a group of passionate rebels to her side, before leading a plan to coup or otherwise overthrow the current government, throwing the nation into a bloody and chaotic conflict that may take years or even decades to finish. Usually, she truly believes in the plights of these people, and fights to the bitter end no matter the cost
  • A philosopher and deep thinker who loves nothing more than to debate, come up with new ideas, and participate in stimulating conversation; the whole "demon" thing is secondary to this goal. Whenever he appears in the material world, he searches far and wide for people and places where new ideas can be found. Wherever he finds himself, though, he probes anyone he finds for debate - killing them if he finds them lacking - or he will occasionally cause a great amount of chaos or destruction in order to appease the Dark God - causing a mountainside to fall on a village, bringing a great storm to burn a sacred place to the ground, and so on and so forth. He is an incredibly powerful mage, but his curiosity and his ego are his two weaknesses
  • A pair of demons who usually travel together in a platonic but close pair. One of them is dark, cold and gloomy, with a pessimistic attitude that focuses on how bad people can be, while her counterpart is optimistic, fiery, and passionate about his work, focusing more on their successes and their silver linings and always giving more than 100%
  • A creative mastermind who loves to construct alternate realities and pit people against their character flaws to see when they will break. He is exceptional when he has the time to prepare, but can be put on the back foot by doing something completely unexpected, or by coming at him when he isn't prepared - not that he doesn't have contingencies for that, though
  • A heartfelt general, loyal only to her troops and their mission. She is a veteran of war and experienced in handling other people and their emotions. She never backs down, ever - either she wins, or she dies spectacularly with the rest of her army
  • A jovial yet wise trickster who changes form like she changes clothes. She defeats her opponents with common sense observations of their own behavior and a wicked sense of humor
  • A sword-wielding ronin and vigilante, who specifically targets the enablers of gambling and other addictions. He lurks in the shadows of seedy city underbellies, striking fear into the hearts of these people and all those who work for them; he is single-minded in his work, and all too happy to destroy anything that gets in his way
