Alien orbs of living
starlight, the Star Spawn - also known as "Aetherous Helikarae" - coat themselves in layers of inorganic material like how crustaceans wear shells, appearing for all the world like miniature planets. They are a powerful race - each one imbued with flight, telepathy and telekinesis - but their people are dying; they have been for a long time.
Appearance
The true body of a Star Spawn is a tiny star about the size of a pumpkin; a naked Star Spawn is far too bright to stare at directly, far too hot to even get close enough to touch, and with a gravitating force that pulls in small objects around them, begging to feed mass to that inhuman orb.
For many reasons, however, a Star Spawn is almost
never naked.
First, they layer themselves in a molten core made of
Aetherite ore: Aetherite is the "food" of the Star Spawn, the only thing rich enough in energy and special nutrients enough to sustain them.
Then, they add a mantle and a crust: a huge mass of materials that conform spherically to their body, giving them that planetoid aesthetic. To make their shells, Star Spawn use earth, clay, sand, rocks, gems, ores, metals, and so much more in an endless variety of combinations and permutations from one Star Spawn to the next.
To be as clear as possible, Star Spawn are
truly alien, totally lacking any fleshly, humanoid traits like limbs, eyes, and ears.
Birth, Life and Death
Star Spawn are genderless, and do not reproduce in the way most creatures do on Aelladore. Every 100 years, an event known as the
Celestial Alignment occurs: this is the only time when Helikarae are able to produce offspring.
Well in advance of the
Celestial Alignment, a colony of Star Spawn who wish to have children will construct an enormous lens apparatus, which can range in size from that of an observatory room to that of an entire coliseum: this will be the location of the birthing ritual.
The birthing of a Star Spawn is nothing awkward to look at - on the contrary, it is a sacred display of power and light. When the
Celestial Alignment is at hand, the lenses of the ritual room will concentrate cosmic energy down into a single beam. With plenty of Aetherite on hand, the Helikarae in question will all begin to focus their telekinesis into creating opposing forces that
crush the inert material with incredible pressure.
As they do this, the Aetherite will become smaller and smaller, illuminated by the astral energy of the
Cosmic Alignment and the focus of a whirlwind of psionic power.
Soon enough, a pinprick of light far too strong to behold will appear, and a roiling ball of gravitating heat and light will manifest itself: this is a Nova, an infant Star Spawn.
Nova are able to slowly float and minutely exert their own telekinetic power from birth, and are usually energetic little balls of light who are eager to learn. There is no "mother" or "father" in Helikaran culture, and while Nova
can be made with just two Star Spawn, it is more common and usually more preferred for as many Helikarae to be involved in the process as possible.
The raising of infant Star Spawn is not a concerted effort by one or two individuals, but more of a constantly ongoing process of observation and questioning by the Nova and an encouragement by their elders for out-of-the-box thinking and intellectual debate.
Adult Star Spawn are referred to as "Stars". Very elderly Star Spawn - somewhere between 800 and 1,000 years - are called "Quasars".
When a Star Spawn becomes a Quasar, they usually begin to consider what might happen when they die. You see, a dying Helikara usually erupts in a
devastating explosion: a
supernova. Most Quasar find themselves content to say their last goodbyes to their colony, before leaving to find a good place to die far, far away.
All Star Spawn release a supernova when they die, but Quasar are the most at risk, and their supernovas are the most destructive. Regardless of when a Star Spawn dies, they leave behind a "Neutron Core" - a solid, metallic sphere that is
exponentially more heavy than even Aetherite. A Neutron Core is what one might consider the Star Spawn's "corpse".
Telekinesis, Telepathy and Memory Stones
Rather than having hands, feet, or limbs of any kind to give them agency upon the universe, Star Spawn are innately capable of three-dimensional flight, telekinesis to move objects, and telepathy to communicate with other creatures, regardless of whether or not they are spellcasters.
As for the strength they have with these abilities, the
maximum your average Star Spawn can do is: move at the speed of a galloping horse, "jerk" a few feet away from hazards in the blink of an eye, lift a boulder that is about the size of a small house, hold multiple objects and make complex, dexterous motions on something both at the same time, and communicate telepathically at a distance of approximately 300 feet.
Star Spawn telepathy is mostly one-way: they can
send their thoughts to a sentient creature, but they cannot
detect the thoughts of another in any way. Only a willing person can share with a Helikara what is hidden in the privacy of their mind.
When Helikarae need to record a message or other data, they do not use physical text; instead, they psionically imbue an object with a copy of their own memories or a record of their thoughts. Items imbued as such are called
Memory Stones; they are the primary way that Star Spawn record information for review and recall.
Star Spawn on Aelladore
Being as intelligent and long-lived as they are, the Star Spawn set up observatories that peeked out of Primus - one of Aelladore's moons, the homeworld of the Star Spawn. With their observatories, they were able to spot Aelladore even from so far away.
Almost immediately, the news spread like wildfire amongst the Helikaran colonies: a new place to explore, with all kinds of unknown creatures, and possibly, even, more Aetherite! Plans were set in motion and experiments were held in order to find the best method for getting to this place, but it wasn't until one brave and resilient soul took action that the people's dream became a reality.
Whether it was brave or foolish, one Star Spawn loaded up on all of the Aetherite they possibly could for a long journey, before simply heading straight from the surface of Primus and out in the direction of Aelladore. For years - yes,
years - this individual drifted through the cosmos, floating doggedly ever onward toward their goal. They were essentially blind for this entire time - there was no way their senses could reach anything so far away - and they might have even gone mad, had they not actually managed to reach Aelladore's atmosphere.
This Star Spawn crash-landed onto the surface of an alien planet as if they were a blazing
comet; they reveled in their victory for only a moment... before immediately getting to work.
Totally new
Kin were met, deals were made, and after so long adrift and then atumble in a roller coaster of adventure and chaos, they had actually done it: they had led the construction of a magical gate attuned perfectly with another one they had managed to commission beforehand back on Primus, and their people were finally free to travel between Primus and Aelladore.
Or at least, the gates were open for a little while; after a time, complications on either side eventually caused the gates to be damaged, and then they fell into disrepair, and eventually into disuse.
It wasn't all for naught, though: several colonies of Star Spawn had made it to Aelladore, and now, many of the last Star Spawn exist scattered all across the realm.
